There was a made-for-TV movie about the Hunley that I thought was pretty good. I'm not too sure how accurate it was or if it was made before Clive Cussler found the Hunley. It attributed the the sinking, as I recall, to one of the portholes being shot out which was the original theory. Clive Cussler seemed to think it was sunk when it was hit by another ship coming to the aid of the one the Hunley had "torpedoed".

To me Gettysburg is definately my favorite, Gods and Generals wasn't all that bad, but not as good as Gettysburg. Saw Cold Mtn. yesterday, as I got into the movie I realised I had read the book, The book was better, but the movie is pretty good. I told the wife everyone says its a chick flick, she said she thought it was pretty bloody for her taste.

I have to believe the actors who play actual characters. With that in mind Gods and Generals is my pick. Stephen Lang IS Jackson and Duvall IS Lee. I just couldn't watch Gettysburg with martin sheen as Lee. What were they thinking?  :(
I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him.

I haven't seen "Gods and Generals" yet -- I've been deployed too long.  So, without having that to compare to anything, I'll go with "Gettysburg."
"Andersonville" was good, and so was "Buffalo Soldiers."  The mini-series "North and South" wasn't bad, but the soap opera drama got a little thick at times.

I loved Josey Wales, Gettysburg and Glory.  Gods and Generals was good but long.  While not a movie per se, I did thoroughly enjoy the Ken Burn's series.

Cold Mountain just didn't do it for me.  I found it to be long and pointless.  Being a pastor, I am a bit sensitive about how the clergy and believers are portraited in movies.  Hollywood seems to have no problem bashing Christians while uplifting supersitions such as looking into a well through a mirror. I did like the scenes of the Crater and wish someone would do a movie about Petersburg some day.

Blessings!

When they mispronounced the town of Philippi (Now West) Virginia in the first episode of the Ken Burns series, I wondered how much research they had actually done.

My favorite of the more recent ones is Gettysburg. I was a little disappointed in Cold Mountain. I also like the old classics like Shenandoah and Friendly Persuasion.

My sister bought my Gods and Generals and Gettysburgh for Christmas and I have to say that I enjoyed Gettysburgh more.  That could be attributed to the fact that my wife and I actually visited Gettysburgh this past summer and I could actually visualize where the fighting was taking place in the movie.

As a side bar:
All of those monuments at Gettysburgh really moved me.  All those men that died on that soil and those permanent monuments in their honor...Truly awe inspiring.

Well you asked so here goes:
1. Gone with the Wind
2.Gettysburg and
3. Gods and Generals

I can understand how Augustus McCrae might feel about Martin Sheen given the actor's political calling but having said that, the scene where  Sheen is dressing down Jeb Stuart is pure Robert E. Lee in my humble opinion.

Thanks for having me  :D

I liked Gettysburg the best.  The movie was very close to the book "The Killer Angels", which it is based on.  Jeff Bridges (I think) was a great Chamberlin.

God's and Generals was good, but I liked Gettysburg much more.  I havn't seen Cold Mtn yet.  I also enjoyed all the old classics, GWTW, The Horse Soldiers, The Outlaw Josie Wales...etc.  The Blue and the Gray and North and South were good too.  I wouldn't mind seeing them again, but I have no idea where to even find a copy.

Gettysburg, Gods and Generals and Outlaw Josey Wales would be my top three.

I must agree with Augustus McCrae that Duvall is a way better pick to be Lee than sorry old Sheen.

I can't wait for the third in the series so to speak of the Gettysburg and Gods and Generals par to get here, but near as I can tell they haven't begun work on it yet at least according to Ron MAxwells webpage.

The all time best Civil War movie is Gone With The Wind. Coming in a close 2nd would be Beulahland (1970's) and 3rd would be a tie between the two tv miniseries North and South, (Books I, II, and III),  and The Blue and the Gray
