300 whisper
« on: October 22, 2008, 02:34:54 PM »
Have any of you tried the 300 whisper in an encore? From what I understand the factory barrels are 1-10 twists and was wondering how heavy a bullet would shoot from this twist rate? I was wanting to try one but would want to shoot 180 or 200 grain bullets. Also, what kind of accuracy could one expect?

Not well. If you want to use it as it was designed for both heavy bullets at subsonic velocity and lighter faster bullets at higher velocity go with an SSK barrel and faster twist. You might do OK with 180s if you push them hard in the factory barrels but I kinda doubt you'll be satisfied with the heavier ones.

I think the heaviest I ever used in my factory TC barrel was 150s which did OK. I mostly used 125/130 grain bullets in it. I might have once tried 165s but doubt it as that's not a weight I use much.

My experience classifies it as an anemic 30-30.  With a heavy bullet, it is lobing it.  I had poor luck.  Went to Rem 125 gr to get it to shoot flatter.

A friend had one made on a CZ rifle frame.  At 100 yds, he was not impressed.  Redid the rifle into 30 rem and gave to a young shooter.
