Off with the old, on with the new - I thought someone might be interested in an intermediate pic of a Mauser 98 bolt, after the turn-down bolt handle was hacked off, and a new Remington 700 bolt handle welded in it's place.

A little grinding/filing/stoning/polishing of the welds, and an overall polishing, and it should be ready to set in the action to start relieving a channel in the stock for part of the stem.

bilmac: as you can imagine, a different bolt handle really adds a touch of individualized class to a Mauser. Check the Brownells catalog. I believe they also carry the Remington bolt handle and a host of others, including a nice looking spoon handle that would make your Mauser look like a Mannlichter. Mikey.

Yes that short turned down Mauser one needed replacing, been there and got it done

, now I submit this one for your perusal:-

Now surely that far better looking that that Remington one? just look at the square corners on it

surely they need rounding. The one in the photo was Tigged on and you cannot see where it was done

No I didn't do it but had it fitted by Norman Clark of Rugby but the bolt handle is most likely of American manufacture as Norman gets a lot of stuff from the US. I never asked as it's comfortable to use and looks good too!

Errrrr can you hoenstly say that that squared bit of steel with a blob on the end with impressed checkering is better looking than the one that Norman Clark fitted to my Swedish Mauser?

I didn't choose the handle just handed the rifle over for a proper bolt handle and got this one which is comfortable and even attractive to the eye

unlike that poor Remington example. It's things like that which make the Remington such an uncomfortable rifle to use not withstanding that they were designed to be brazed on as the Remington bolt is brazed up.

Obviously your right and constructive criticism is not welcome. Heck it's your rifle to spoil it any way you wish after all I will enver have to see it let alone shoot it and for that I am very ..................... very grateful

Who knows maybe it will be more accurate with the Remington handle. It couldn't hurt.

It's things like that handle that make the Remington 700 the best selling, best looking, and most accurate production rifle in the world.

Ranger, use what ever handle tickles your fancy. I don't think that the Remington handle feels worse than any other handle.

I happen to think Rem rifles look classy, well the more expensive of the line-up anyway; CDL's and BDL's etc. What cartridge are you chambering it for Ranger?

Swampman & Luckyducker:

A close, old pal bought it, when we were cruising a gun show together about thirty years ago - for $100.

It had already been rebarreled to .30-06, had a ramped front sight and a Williams peep installed - along with a nice walnut sporter stock w/cheekpiece (no monte carlo).

He sighted it in, then never used it - storing it in his attic, along with all his other guns.

When he said he was going to sell it, last month, along with some other guns - I asked to buy it for "whatever he wanted for it", telling him I thought it was worth at least $300-$350, today.
My friend said he only wanted his money back from me.

So.......... I'm upgrading the styling a bit, changing the bolt handle, and planning to refinish the stock, etc.

I shot it asap I got it, though - and it's pretty accurate, giving me several 1" groups with the peep.

I'll post some pics when it;s done - but I'm temporarily laid up with a foot injury since last week, and have to stay off my feet for awhile, and can't stand up at my workbench & work on it much.

Whoops missed this one

Naw the P-14 and P-17's are way different as you can see here:-

BSA modified some like this:-

but again it's not like the one fitted to the Mauser. Both rifles sre BSA sporterised ones from the period 1947-1953.

I finished changing the bolt handle on my .30-06 Mauser from the issue bent bolt to a Remington 700 handle, I ordered as a spare part from Remington.

I'm sorry for the poor pic quality, and the long time it took (bum foot + no camera)

Brithunter - I really do not have either an aestetic or functional problem with that reworked bolt handle. I love my Mausers but the bolt handles drive me nuts when the rifle has been scoped and the bolt handle, albeit reworked, simply does not provide sufficient clearance for the hand to manually operate the bolt as a military bolt should be operated.

The only mil-surp rifle I have ever used that did not require re-working the bolt for a scope is the SMLE and they are a lot of fun to use. All my scoped Swedes give me very little room twixt the scope and the bolt and I can not smoothly work the bolt with even a lens cover on the scope.

The gunsmith knew what he was doing and the rifle looks beautiful and shoots incredibly well but I lost a lot of the 'speed capability' of a manually operated military bolt action by scoping the rifle. I may yet have that bolt redone. Mikey.

No, it's been long rebarreled to .30-06 - restocked by some unknown soul, too.

Only the action & bottom metal is issue Mauser 98, polished & reblued - also over forty years ago, AFAIK.

I know I could have positioned the knob closer to the stock (bore C/L) via simply grinding or cutting the old bolt stub off shorter/closer to the bolt body - but I chose not to, for a few reasons:

1) It's MY rifle, no one else's, and I wanted room for MY large (fat

) hand to cycle the bolt.

2) As can be plainly seen in the pics, I have zero intention of scoping it - since it shoots quarter-sized groups with the peep, as far as I can see while hunting.

That's why I didn't change to a Buehler(sp)-type/low safety, too.

What I haven't taken pics of - due to my very poor camera skills - is the reworked sling swivel bases.
Some soul, as I mentioned, took the trouble to restock the sporterized Mauser in a nice walnut half-stock w/cheekpiece - then inletted issue, military-style, two-screw 1 1/2" sling loops ! To top it off, the loops/bases were typical military grungy.
I cut the loops in half & removed them, then ground/filed about 1/8" from each/both side(s) of both the front & rear bases around the old pinhole (using a Q.D. sling swivel as my guide), until I came up with a clone of a Winchester Super Grade sling swivel base.
With some additional fine filing, emorying, power polishing & a cold blue - I have a set of Q.D. sling loops that have fairly stylish inletted bases.

Whaddya expect, from a $100 rifle ?
