First range session with the 799 in 7.62x39
« on: April 16, 2008, 09:10:50 AM »
Some months back, Cabela's had a sale on the 799s. I picked one of the last two they had in 7.62x39 as I was looking for a small rifle in a light-kicking caliber for my son to deer hunt with. It seemed like this little Remington import might fit the bill. Anyway, I think those little guns are cute-as-a-button...

While I patiently waited for the back-ordered Leupold base to arrive. I took the opportunity to cycle the action some 300 times in front of the TV to smooth it out some, as the action was atrociously rough, right out of the box (I'd heard that the rough action was a common complaint with these, so I was ready for that).

The safety latch also seems very stiff, no matter how many times I cycle it. Maybe this is for liability reasons... am hoping that my 13 yr old can manage it without too much trouble.

The base finally came in (seemed to take forever) , so I mounted a 3-9 variable scope and took it to the range with a box each of Remington and Winchester factory loads, plus some handloads that I made up with some of the factory brass that I was lucky enough to find after my SKS flung the empties randomly about the range during previous shooting sessions.

Bad news:

1) The reloads wouldn't chamber, my bad... the SKS has a larger chamber (apparently) than the 799 and I didn't resize far enough down the case. I'll correct for that with the next handloads.

2) The safety latch is still rough to manipulate...

Good news:

1)  It's a shooter! I bore-sighted through the breech prior to that first shot, so the first two shots hit paper, just about 3" high @ 50 yds. 100 yd groups were running right around an inch for 3 shots with factory loads on a windy day. The Win. ammo hitting low compared to the Remington fodder. Last group for the day was exactly 1 1/8" I'm pretty well satisfied with that kind of accuracy for a brush-gun.

2)  No big surprise that recoil was minimal. Another nicety was the fact that the barrel takes alot of shooting before it starts to heat-up. (I am officially cured of 'Magnumitis'!)

3) It's still as cute-as-a-button...

All-in-all I'm happy with it. My son should be able to perform admirable execution on our smallish central Texas whitetails with it come Fall.

Just needed to talk about it!

HH!

(Say, is it true that I shouldn't shoot Wolf ammo etc. in this bolt-gun because the primers are harder and may damage the firing pin???)

Thanks for the report. I too am looking at these and was interested in seeing how they perform. Sounds pretty good to me and I look forward to hearing about more about your handloads. What loads are you going to be working with?
As for the Wolf I am not sure... I hear lots of rumors too.

About handloads and Wolf...

Kinda' cautious about listing handloads here, but I've got a can of 3031 and some Speer 130 gn. softpoints to play with for now.

About using mil-spec ammo, I've since done some research and many claim to have experienced broken firing pins, misfires etc. from using mil-spec ammo with hard primers in their sporting rifles.

One fellow posted that after he had to return his mini-30 to Ruger for a broken pin, they chastised him for shooting Wolf ammo in it and advised against it (I say shame on Ruger... all it would take is one sentence of explanation in the owner's manual to prevent this from happening).

Anyway, I'll stick with American factory ammo until I can get an accurate handload worked up.

It really is a delightful little rifle to shoot with such a mild cartridge. The more I work the safety (a good use of 'TV time')  the smoother it gets.

Yes, for now it's my favorite 'couch-gun'. Looking to try on Mule Deer, Whitetail and hogs next fall...

What bore diameter is the 799...308 or 310 - 312?
If you are looking for more info you can search about the late small ring Charles Daly Mausers.... these are suppose to be the same, but Remington evidently got the contract for themselves.
If it slugs out to 308 then I would be cautious on using Wolf ammo. But would definitely be good for the reloader.... I would suspect it to me 311 diameter.

My thoughts also, especially since it's an E. European product... haven't tried slugging it yet, but it shoots U.S. factory ammo well (this ammo was miking abt. .310 for bullet dia.)

I'll be trying out .308 dia. bullets with my first handloads. I'm hoping that I can use the same slugs that I'm enjoying good success with in my .308 Winchester loads.

I'll let you know how they shoot and can get you the load off-forum if you want.

Hey Skillet, have you had a chance to get out and shoot anymore with this little rifle?
If so what bullets and loads?
PM them to me if you don't feel comfortable about posting them...
Thanks.

Been away for awhile...

Yes Aaron, I actually killed two spikes this winter on a little 30 acre ranch I just moved onto with handloads out of this gun.

I'm using a .310 dia 123 gn softpoint bullet over a minimum load of 3031. I believe it's 25 gns of 3031... please consult your reloading manual and make sure you're using a safe load!

I'll try to get some pics up in reply to the other gentleman's post.

Sorry for the delay in responding, been busy clearing brush, shooting foxes and raising chickens!

Skillet, I bought a 799 in .223 rem, last month. I agree bolt is ruff, how is your trigger, I have a lot of creep in mine. Seems like forever. Going to buy a timney trigger soon, getting about 1" groups with mine also, should shrink that with a good hand load.  I would love to got one in 7.63X39 but bass pro only had them in .223 and 22-250; bought mine @ bass pro on sale for 369.00 couldn't beat the price.

Not high-jacking your thread, but here's pics of mine.

Not knowing much about the 799 I was expecting something really "cheap looking" but that is actually quite a sharp looking rifle! Nice , and sounds they they shoot pretty well too!

Yeap the former Charles Daly version of it was set up with a nice stock and polish.

I am still curious who has picked up the contract to import these as Remington isn't any more ???
