HP or HC?
« on: October 24, 2008, 03:00:45 AM »
Need some advice.  Starting to reload for a Ruger SBH .44 mag 7 1/2".  95% of my hunting is for Texas Whitetails with a few Turkeys and small to mid-size hogs.  I will start with 2400 as my powder since I've had really good accuracy with it in the past.  My bullet weight will be in the 240-250 grain range and will try for 1000-1100 fps.  50 yards and under on shot distance.  My question...would you go with a hollow point, or like a flat-nose hard cast, or does it matter based on my specs?  I'm looking for accuracy first, but good exansion on what I hunt.  Thanks for any help!

regards,
Randy

Matters not at that velocity it's unlikely you'll get much if any expansion from the JHP so it's gonna act more or less like a cast bullet with whatever size meplat it has. If you're not gonna push it any faster than that I'd say just go with a cast bullet and wide meplat. Which by the way is never a bad choice anyway.

Yep , what GB said , at those speeds you will not see a diffrence in bullet style . just go with a good cast for around 1/2 the price of jacketed and shoot twice as much .  ;)

Prefer cast myself to, make a nice hole all the way thru. I don't worry about expansion at all.

Thanks guys.  Great help here, as always.  At what speed would expansion come into play?

For what I shoot mostly I don't think my boolets ever expand, Not much anyway.  One of the only boolets I ever recovered,( from a .357 max @ 2000FPS)  Showed no sign of expansion, The deer however showed great sign of boold loss from that hole going clean thru her chest cavity.  Works for me. 8)

1000-1100fps with a 240grainer with 2400 out of a 7.5 inch SRH is pretty slow , without stepping into dangerous areas my loads of 240grainers pushed by 2400 in my 7.5 inch SRH runs at about 1400 fps on the nose.
