6.5/308 (260) Improved or 6,5x57 Improved?
« on: January 27, 2012, 03:20:14 AM »
Anyone ever use this round? I also read where the 6.5x57 Improved was optimum for a 6.5, but it didn't say what bullet weight. I just wondering which round would come closer to 6.5x284 velocities. I had the latter in a Mod 700 short action and only used 120/125gr Noslers. I had trouble getting that .284 case to feed right. A Mod 7 with either of the above wildcats on a .308 or 7mm mauser case would work better.

For a Model 7 I would personally choose a 6.5 Creedmoor. Either of the ones you mentioned, with the bullet seated to the base of the neck, will be too long to feed from the magazine. The Creedmoor gives very good ballistics (140s at 2800 easy) and is properly sized to feed through a short action.

I agree for shooting the 140, heavier bullets, the 6.5 Creedmoor looks like the cat's meow. However, I should have clarified, I would limi bullet weight to 120/125, like I did in my previously owned 6.5/284. I loaded to to 2.78" and in a 24" bbl got right at 3200fps, it was a real killer, flat too. But that last round would give me fits, never did feed right.
I've also seen 6mm Remingtons in Model 7's, so a 6.5/57 Improved might be doable in a Model 7 action. I'm just brainstorming, typical Wildcat disorder, ha.

As to magazine length they make the Wyatt magazine box http://wyattsoutdoor.com/index.php/cPath/1.  Hornady has loads for the 6.5 Creedmore 120/123gr bullet max @ 3000fps and if you did the 260AI you might match your 6.5x284 loads.  there some guys loading the 260AI on the 6br forum you can get on that site and talk velocity to them.

Thanks Pard. I decided to not butcher up this Model 7 I currently have. I had left my grandson's .240W ( a Mod 700 rifle I had made up for my other daighter's boy) with my Marine SIL, so I took the Mod 7 I had ( 22-250 Ackley fast twist) over and swapped them out. His baby girl ( she is 2.5 now) will be our Huntress. I hope to at least interest my grandson in shooting later on, but his Mom is still over-protective. Oh well, I may still build another wildcat later on. If I do, it will be a 6.5 "something or other",ha.
