45-70 load in a .458?
« on: October 28, 2008, 07:51:22 AM »
Hi all,

I'm hoping that someone will be able to give me a starting load for a 405 grn. cast FNGC bullet in my .458 Win.  I would like to run that bullet around 1600 fps.

What powder would you choose, and would you use a filler?

Thanks for any replies, and good shootin' to ya!

Come on Corbanzo.  Are you out hunting?  You've had to put a load like this together.

The Lyman 48th has several powders listed for 385gr and 475gr cast bullets in that velocity range that I'd be working with if I had some 405gr gas checked bullets that had to be shot in the 458WM.  ;)

3rd Edition of Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook does not show any loads for a 405 gr bullet. That doesn't mean they can't be used.
Looking at the selection they have that comes close, I see a 385 gr and a 482 gr. bullet.

The difference in the six listed powders from Unique to IMR 4064  are no more then 4.0 gr apart for the maximum loads listed for one type of powder, the rest are even less.

                                Example.

385 gr bullet                                           482 gr bullet
  2400        25.0 gr   to   31.0 gr                    24.0 gr    to 30.0 gr

  IMR 4198   53.0 gr  to    57.0 gr                    49.0 gr    to  53.00

I can only tell you from the 45-70 Govt perspective that any  load that goes above 40 grains of smokeless powder with a 405 grain bullet will push back with increasing authority.

Thanks BBF for the reply.  I really do appreciate it!

I'm still curious about the use of a filler; Dacron, Cream of Wheat, etc...   The full power loads I have worked up with this cartridge have all been slightly compressed, so a filler material has never been a concern.  I've been a handloader for around 40 years now, but have never had a situation where fillers were needed.

Got any suggestions in that area?

Thanks again,  George
