Savage 110 "J"

Anyone have one or information on the savage  J series rifles.  I just picked up on in the 7mm rem mag I noticed the barrel nut is different than on my other 110 rifles .

Let me guess, the nut has round bottom notches in it?  If so, these are on the older savage actions, they went through a lot of small changes over the years, different extractors, different barrel breaches different action lengths, on and on.  What else can you tell us about it?  Larry

 Left handed bolt , long action,  24" barrel, wooden stock, deep checkering.  Barrel is marked on side    110 DL  "J" series. the barrel nut has one (1) hole in it on the underside have to remove from stock to see it. Adjustable rear sight, (screws on left n right side)  better sight than on my newer 110's.  Question will barrel nut and barrels from newer 110 work with this action. The reason for this question is I like 26" or 28" barrels on my mag. cal. This is just me   Thanks JIM

OK, some of the Mags had a larger barrel shank than standard Savages.  If there is a noticable step down in front of the barrel nut then you have a large shank action, if not it is the standard 1.055 inch 20tpi barrel.  The new nut will fit unless you have something I have never seen or heard of.  If it is the large shank barrel then the new barrel nut in large shank size will fit, they use the same wrench for both the large and small shank, the inside of the nut is just a different size.  Larry

The new barrel nut will work, as will the newer barrels if it has the new style bolt head.  If it has the old style bolt you'll need to have a barrel made to fit or change to the new style bolt.

The recessed breach barrel was only used for a year or two, they look like a Remington barrel with the nose of the bolt fitting into a recess in the breach.  After that they have flat breaches.  It would only take about an hour to turn a new barrel into the old style as long as you have a proper chamber reamer.  Larry
