A couple of firsts this past weekend
« on: November 03, 2008, 04:23:09 PM »
First kill in front of my youngest who seemed to be very impressed.  First open-sight handgun kill, which was nothing short of awesome for me.  The skinny...Ruger SBH .44 Mag.  The load is a 240 grain Sierra JSP pushed by 17 grains of 2400, right at 1225 fps.  My lease is in the Texas Hill Country just outside of Junction.  The pic is a little grainy because my camera is set at too low of a resolution.  Thanks for letting me share.

best,
Randy

Absolutely fantastic!!  Congratulations!  What a cool feeling it is to take a big game animal with a open-sighted wheel gun, and you got to include your two lovely daughters in it to.  Very impressed.

More specifics on the situation/shot would be welcome.

Thanks guys.  It was a very cool moment.  The shot, as requested, was a 50 yard broadside shot.  The doe was very calm and had no clue we were there, which is amazing considering my girls are 6 and 8 and are learning the art of shhhhhh-ology.  She ran about 30 yards before crashing hard.  The bullet went completely through.  Unbelievable moment.  I don't think any dad truly knows how their kids will react the first time they witness this, but both of mine did very well with it.  My oldest says she wants to hunt someday as well.  I guess since hunting and eating what we kill has been a part of their lives since they were born, it's just "what we do" to them.  I'm glad they are at an age where lifelong memories have started and hopefully so is the passion for the outdoors.  Thanks again for the comments.

regards,
Randy

Nice job...I am hoping to hunt with a handgun for the first time this year--but already have trouble getting off at work.
