45-70   the  biggest  and  a  good round  [and  named after  me]

444  big  too  and  i  have 280g mould from LBT   and  piles  of  bullets ready and cheap
      and  i  always  wanted  a 444

35 rem     my  first  gun   and  good round   [nostalgic  to  me}

30-30    doesn't get  more classic   [but  i  have  some 30-30s]

308  marlin     new  round  [i  have  308   win  and  like  it]   probably  my  last choice

list  you choice  in  order


any  opinions  on  chopping
don't like  the strait grip on  the  guides  or  ports

I want the .35 Rem XLR so bad that I can already feel it in my hands......I'd have to chop it to 22" though, I think that the 24" barrel is a tad too long for my eyes, and maybe have the thing coated with a matte black finish instead of the stainless. I think that would look better with the gray stock.   BUT, that takes money, as usual, and I have many other things to spend money on right now.

5.  .45/70 (hard to decide between this and the .444, but I know many people with 45/70, no one I know has a .444....  I like to be different).

When the .450 first came out, a goober (yep, I said goober) that I know bought one, the first that I'd heard of anyone locally getting.  He'd never owned a centerfire rifle before, all of his deer hunting was done with an old Savage pump shotgun and foster slugs.  His strategy was that if the deer run through an onslaught of lead, one the slugs is bound to hit it.   

So anyway, he bought the .450 in the Marlin.  Used it once and sold it.  Said that it kicked way to hard for him to use, even though it "was such a flat shooting bullet."  Dumbfounded, I said "What?"  He proceeds to tell me that the gun shoots really flat, when it's dead on at 100 yds it's only 6" low at 300.  YEAH.  I asked him if he ever shot it at 300 yds.....NOPE.

Ignorance is NOT a pretty thing.

I guess it IS flat shooting, if all you are used to is Pumpkinballs out of an old Savage.

To the OP, wait a few months, they should be coming out with the .338 Marlin Express soon .

ar-10 won't be for 10  months  [if at  all]

i  figured  the  45-70  would be the assault rifle  in  an OBAMANOTION

also  got  the  SS  45-70  H&R  in case we are redused to single shots
