Blackhorn
« on: November 05, 2008, 03:09:05 PM »
Very pleased with 120 grains of Blackhorn, 250 grain Shockwave, Remington 209 primer. Oklahoma black powder season just ended Sunday. had no shots at any older bucks so I passed. My Encore was loaded for 3 weeks with out firing it. Shot it today to empty weapon. Dead on at 100 yards, no corrosion fo any kind in my Encore. A great black powder substitute.................

Based on some of my internet research, it looks like the CCI 209M (magnum) or the Federal 209A primers are the most appropriate primers for use with BlackHorn powder. They are both hotter then most other 209's available. BlackHorn does require a hotter/longer ignition source than other BP substitutes.

Just in case anyone is interested.  :)

Just some more trivia - i am shooting BH very successfully from my Omega using the 25 ACP conversion.  I do use the CCI #450 primer (small rifle mag).  Works dag-gone-good - except I can not afford to shoot the powder as much as I shoot.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Yep, I did... 8 out of ten shots went off just fine.  And the ones that didn't may have been my fault - If I had not seated the sabot firmly on the powder.  I 'think' I found that my old method of just seating the sabot on the powder was not the best. So now I seat it - then compress it with ?lbs of pressure - works better.  I am not saying try to crush it but compress it.

None of those problems with the 450's - but i was more conscious of seating the combination with pressure..
