Diagnosis Needed
« on: October 24, 2008, 03:38:11 PM »
This is my first post here.I think I have been bitten badly by this T/C bug I have read about.Been reading a lot of the posts,13 hours worth, and finally have questions.I have owned an older contender carbine for a while and once I got my 7-30 waters barrel on it and couldn't believe the accuracy with the factory loads, I had to get a pistol frame for myself to see what I could do with that, a few barrels later some more furniture and now I find myself wanting a muzzleloader setup for it. So I start looking around and thinking I need to get an encore, but that isn't good enough after looking around I have found that I NEED a pro hunter from the custom shop with the gold scroll. Lets look at how I got to this decision My carbine is an older blued frame, I could get a G2 muzzleloader setup and cut the tab off(I know it would void the warranty and lets face it the pressures from the black powder aren't any higher than the 45/70, so it can be done) and I would rather have the stainless for the blackpowder plus I like having the option of the larger calibers. But I have an older Blued T/C Scout that has taken a fair amount of deer and well over few hundred rounds thru it and It still looks great, so is stainless/gold necessary? I think so.The next concern I have on the pro hunter muzzleloader is with their speed breach, I would rather not have it so I would be looking for an older encore with a breach plug that is threaded all the way, 25% less thread = a longer breach, am I right on this? The stock is the next thing, I like their new Flextech but does any one know what the difference between the thumbhole flextech and the pistol grip in perceived recoil, the thumbhole stock has two fewer of their "recoil absorbing arches" but they are the smaller ones. I have a thumbhole on my carbine and love it so if there is minimal difference that is what I will go with. Next is what caliber besides the muzzleloader do I start out with. My main Deer gun is a ruger 77 MKII 308 and I haven't gotten skunked yet (I probably will regret typing that), My Moose/Elk gun is a Win 70 338WM w/boss, I have 223 in both my contenders plus a mini 14, My grandfathers Stevens 30/30, numerous 22s 22magnums +. So I have no other choice than getting a 45/70 which I don't have yet.So here is what I am going to be looking for Pro Hunter with the scrolling in 45/70 (older encore muzzleloader down the road) thumbhole flextech stock and a scope to be decided on later.Does this BUG ever go away.Is anyone going to try to talk me out of this, besides my wife?

Well I hate to tell you this.. But the "BUG " never go's away I move slowly (at time's) And I just realised I have unused furniture laying around..I have only 1 frame and 3 barrel's.. Problem is that I want to take 2 guns out with me for deer season..I live in Illinois ..so I can onlu muzzelloader or shotgun hunt.. I just bought a new Prohunter 20ga slug barrel... So I have been pricing frame's... Local dealer says $399 for a SS pruhunter frame and furniture..black syn of course....My problem is simular to yours ..I really know I NEED that..But my wife is confused as to why i just cant use my new CZ453 Varminter .22lr...Or my new H&R Ultra Handy Rifle .22mag.... I cant get her to understand this thing.. But she aint no dummy...She can count.. And knows 2 new guns..(and scope's) have come through the door.... And this bug is really eating at me... Maybe her memory will fade a little here . She knew something was up last spring when I br ought home "Another" 14 gun case.... Those little empty slots ..They look so lonesome just sitting there. So will it ever go away? I sure hope not. Truthfully I am very fortunate... My wife really doesnt complain very badly about new hunting thing's.... I just got to replenish my budget..Then I am going to orer that new frame ... Drop

The T/C addiction is bad.  Once piece of advice; if you scope your rifles, use Warne bases with their quick detach rings.  That way, even though you have about 100 barrels you can easily switch scopes around so won't have to have 100 scopes.

Don't you have to re zero for each barrel every time you take the scope off of one and put it on another? I can not believe it would have the same zero from one barrel to the next.

Hi
The only thing I would add. Is for you need to be careful of NEED!! Guns, T/Cs, cars Get expensive if you NEED them. If you sit with money in your pocket until you find someone that NEEDS to sell, you will do a lot better!!! I am bad with t/Cs..."Sure I'll buy that!" I don't NEED but I really like!! But when you already have a couple it gets hard to even LIKE. Unless the price is really great. I will never say how many frames or barrels I have, in case my wife starts reading Graybeard.
Yes! I am an T/C addict.

Don't you have to re zero for each barrel every time you take the scope off of one and put it on another? I can not believe it would have the same zero from one barrel to the next.

You will likely have to rezero to some extent when switching scopes between barrels but not in every case.  Say, however, that you have 20 barrels.  You're probably not going to shoot them all at once and it's a simple matter to rezero.  A way to get around this is with target knobs.  Just record the settings when taking off a scope to put on another barrel.  When putting the scope back on the barrel later, it's an easy matter to just reset the scope to the original settings.

Of course, the target knob thing may not work with one of the cheaper scopes.  But then, if you don't have to buy 10 or 20 scopes for your barrels, you can afford 2 or 3 really good scopes.

Thanks for the replies. One thing nobody has responded to my take on the speed breach. Am I wrong on thinking that the removal of the threads to make it a speed breach takes some muzzle velocity away, does the loss of the inch or so of loss not make much of a difference?Their regular ML barrels for the pro hunter are 28 inch w/speed breach their regular encore is 26 inch no speed breach and their katahdin barrel is 20 inch but it doesn't come with the speed breach. It looks like they think there is enough to make the speed breach 2 inches longer.Maybe I should post this in the ML forums.

The Pro Hunter barrels are longer than the older barrels; I think that's the only reason the newer muzzle loader barrels are longer.  I very much doubt that the speed breech will cause any velocity loss.
