G2 question

Being a T/C nubie I am hoping yall can help with some questions.

I am looking at a G2 stanless carbine in 45/70 and was wondering several things:
Can this setup take full house(Ruger#1) 45/70 rounds or the more sedate trapdoor specs?
Are the barrels interchangable with the Encore?
I had read an article about the .45 BP, how about 50cal BP and .308 if used as a carbine?

I have read about the weight difference and trigger stuff, are there any other advanages to the G2 over the Encore?
I live in the mountains of N.GA and weight can make a huge difference

the g2 is very light and handy. you can load the .45-70 to trapdoor loads, as i understand it. besides, the rifle weighs 5 pounds. you definitely do not want to be shooting heavy loads in it or your shoulder will quit on you.


if i were buying, i would be looking at the encore. mostly because if you intend to use it for more than one thing, you run into too many problems with only being able to use certain cartridges with the g2, whereas the encore can handle them all.

The G2 is a faster handling rifle and the firing pin selector on the hammer could be a plus.   I have a G2 in 209x45 muzzleloader and it's a very nice little rifle...  but if I were going to use a .45-70, I would definitely go for a heavier gun.  I keep loads on the light side in the little muzzleloader out of respect for my nose and forehead.  Certainly you would want a Simms pad on the G2 in that caliber - they do help a lot.  The shorter barrel length on the G2 would surely not be a plus for .45-70 use.

Meant to add that, IMHO, making the G2 in .50 was something of a mistake on TC's part.  The barrel has to be stepped down in diameter to fit the G2 frame and the breech plug used is quite long and probably expensive by comparison to the G2 or even the standard Encore.  Look at the G2 muzzleloader owner's manual on TC's website and you will see what I mean.  The little frame is a perfect match for the .45 barrels so I would recommend you go that route rather than the .50 (still available at Midsouth - I think).
