Love my 45-70 SS Ultra Hunter
« on: November 02, 2008, 10:11:34 AM »
Went to the range yesterday to re-check my 45-70 SS Ultra Hunter.  It's sighted in to be 3" high at 100 yards.  Fired 4 bullets, first one was a little off.  Then I settled in and went through the drill in my head before shooting the last three.  If Louisiana had allowed it to have been used as a primitve weapon last year and it had been available a year ago, and I had been smart enough to have bought it, I wouldn't have bought my Thompson Center 45 cal Muzzle loader, or the new Browning 7mm-08 that I bought.  It's probably going to make my old Remington 700BDL 30-06, and new my Browning 7mm-08 collect a lot more dust.  It has obsoleted my muzzle loader, unless I go to another state to hunt that does't allow the 45-70 as a primitive weapon.  It could be the only gun you need in Louisiana if you could only have just one gun.  Better get you one in some form or fashion they are becoming hard to come by here and will get harder as the word gets out!!  Can't wait to have a deer walk out at 300 yards or longer.

Nice shootin Jack!!  ;) Using BC calculation software, the LE 45-70 ammo has a BC of .234 when  muzzle velocity is the stated 2050fps, but the actual 3-shot average is 2012fps as recorded over a chrono from the 24" barrel as reported by a shooter on another site. So using that BC, here's your calculated trajectory. It would be very wise to shoot it at 200-300yds to confirm the trajectory tho, that's the only way to know for sure. I had to adjust the zero range to 162yds to get the 3" high at 100yds to work.  ;)
