Help on building a naval cannon
« on: November 07, 2008, 08:24:37 AM »
I've been away for some time a now ready to start building a much larger Naval Cannon, like a 24 pounder Royal Navy. I am looking for a barrell about 3 ft long +/-. I see Dixie gun works has a few barrells, but I am not sure as to to finish their castings to look proper. My goal is to have a failry large naval cannon, but not to big. I can build the carrage and have a blacksmith to make most other metal required.
Thanks much for any ideas.

Oh, what happened to Wild Imports? I can no longer find them online.

You can get a plans set for a 24 pounder of the English style (1779) from the Naval History Center - Detachment Boston.  See this thread for more details.

You can see a 1/5 scale 1" bore gun made to this design here.  It is about 24" long, made from 4" round 1018  and weighs about 50 pounds.  One 50% larger would likely weigh over 150 lbs.

I believe all of Dixie's Iron comes from Hern Iron Works, and if memory serves me these are cast around a sleeve,
may be a good starter barrel but there are better quality out there.
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Hern Barllells are pretty decnet, and buying direct will save you a few bucks. I think Dixie drills the fuse hole for you, so if you buy from Hern be preparead for that. Hern has an NSSA breach blug option available, if you want to upgrade a bit.

I have one of Hern's full sized Carronade barrels (as well as a cohorn mortar barrel). The Carronade barrle is really awesome! I did a build blog on the build on GBO last year ... if you need it I can try to find it for ya.
