Paper Patch Compression Question.
« on: August 08, 2003, 06:05:15 AM »
When loading for the paper patch bullets, does Goax FFg need to be compressed? I am just getting started with paper patch loading and have done some reading on paper patch loading but I have not seen where they mention compression. Any help would be appreciated. I have the book Paper Patch jacket and Hunting with Buffalo Rifles by Mike V.  :D

Paper Patch Compression Question.

Lead pot, where is a good starting point for Goex FFg powder? I was looking at 65 gr. by volume and then compressing. How far should I seat the bullet in the case? I know I have to put a wad over the powder and then a greese cookie and then another wad. But I would like to get a idea of how far the bullet with a paper patch needs to be seated so I can compress the charge to the correct depth.

Thanks for your time.  :-)

Lead pot, I tried it and had to go another .100. The paper patch was in the rifling. It was hard to chamber a round in all the way. I will shoot these and see how it goes. Thanks for the help. :)

Redhawk.
This is what I do.I hope it will give you a guide line to start with.
The bullet is a pure lead tapered cup based bullet. Some dont like the tapered bullet but it workes for me.The diameter patched is the same as the bore.My bullets are seated out were I only have .250 in the case,to allow enough room for the .30 to .60 fiber wad depending on the temperature if it's hot I use the thicker wad.then I use about a .125 lube wad and a photo paper under the bullet. The bullet is friction fit in the case.
In my load I dont use compression over .260,My rifle dont need it.use a compression die dont use the bullet to compress the powder.I use coppy paper for the patch. If you tear the patch when loading it's all over.If you get it right you will like the results

Lead pot: This is how I have my round set up. 64 gr. of Goex FFg dropped from a 24 inch tube with a 0.030 wad over powder, depth from top of case to wad is 0.510. I compress to 0.810 with a compression die. I then put a 0.125 greese cookie and then a 0.060 wad over the grease cookie and push it down over the powder and wad which leaves me 0.625 from top of wad to top of case. I then push the bullet on to of wad by hand. My OAL at the time is 2.820 and I the put it into my seating die and set the over all length to 2.805. I do this to insure there is no air gap. I figure it is only 0.015 and it is not affecting the bullet at all. I will shoot these and report back my findings.

Also thanks for your help. :)
