Season starts saturday
« on: October 30, 2008, 05:02:51 PM »
Well it's time to pick the deer rifle I'll use this weekend. I could see a big feral hog, several nice bucks and will see no less than 20 does. I have ready to go and sighted in a 6MM Remington, a 7x57, 30-06, 7MM RM, a 444 marlin and a 35 Whelen. Farthest distance I would get a shot would be maybe 250 yards but more likely it will be at less than 125 yards. The 7x57 and 30-06 have carried the weight for the last 4 seasons with the 30-06 being the lucky rifle in that it seems I see the biggest deer when I have it though the 7x57 has taken some nice deer too. I have used the 6MM to take several does and it is a fine shooter, I just might take it. I have ammo loaded with 95 grain Ballistic Tips and the 100 grain Corelokt.  The little 6 seems a bit light for some of the feral hogs though, Hmmmm.

I know you're leaning towards lighter and faster, but there's just something about the 444 and 35 Whelen that says nailing them with a big chunk of lead is ok too. Nice to smack a hog with too.
7X57 is a good compromise between recoil and performance

Yeah and I put the 7x57 together as my perfect Texas deer rifle.  The 35 W and the 444 are for hog hunting at night and I have lugged the 35 W to the lease on every trip this year and have yet to see a hog. Must be to scary for em.
