moly remover
« on: October 26, 2008, 06:07:35 PM »
Posted on wildcat somehow but should be here.  I have several hundred Combined Technologies moly-coated partition gold bullets in 308 that are 150 grains.  I read SOMEWHERE there is a moly remover that will not damage the bullets.

Anybody know of any.

Off my own topic.  Anybody have any experience with 30 cal 150 partition bullets on deer size game?

I have taken it off by putting it in my brass tumbler. The bullets didn`t seem to be less accurate, but they were not as shiney as new ones.

I have several hundred in .243. I used some scotch brite pads on a few. looked clean but it took a while. Tried laquer thinner and a few other solvents no help.   TVC15

From a .30-06 yes but only limited experience. I think I've taken maybe a couple deer with them. They worked OK but personally I prefer 180s in the '06.

Tumble in walnut shell media. I used corn-cob media which also works but it's slower.

I've used a spray cleaner that is made for electronic parts cleaning. I lay the bullets on a soft towel and spray them good. Roll them between 2 layers of the towel a few seconds and the bullets are moly free. The towel is black though!. This stuff dries before the towel is removed. It does have a smell like ether and evaporates quickly. It seems to burn MY skin if it gets on them when wet. The label says CRC industrial grease & oil remover.

Winchester (One half of the Combined Technologies) does not use moly, they use a special coating (which they refer to as Lubalox), which is coated to the bullet using a process that is much like bluing, and contains no Molybdenum Disulfide.  This is the reason you can put Winchester Supreme bullets in your pocket, and not have the coating rub off like Hornady, Berger, Sierra, etc., Moly coated bullets.
