Anyone crazy enough for this one?
« on: August 04, 2003, 01:49:40 AM »
I just saw that someone has a 15 inch - non ported - barrel chambered in 416 Rem Mag for sale on ebay - talk about crazy!   Talk about extreme handgunning. :D  Has anyone shot one of these?  Is it as bad as they say?  Anyone shooting anything with above 4000 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle?

Don't worry, if Wade gets the barrel, he wouldn't let anyone take the first shot.  He is sort of finicky when it comes to breaking in his big boomers.
Right Wade?  All Wade & Fifty know how to do is keep getting bigger and bigger when it comes to specialty handguns.  These two like living on the upper limit of recoil & performance of specialty handguns.

:-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D .Yes I will try to take a video.

Now Ernie you know I will let you or fifty take the first shot :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  ok well maybe not.

if fiftydriver does my XP in 375RUM he will get to shoot it first.

never had a 416 pistol yet.Did some load work it looks like a 400gr bullet at 2000fps so close to 4000pounds of energy. My 458 does 2200 with a 300gr and 1800 with a 500gr so it should fit in real nice. And it should be real fun

I have a 375 H&H pistol barrel on order from Reeder Custom Guns, and kind of want to wait and see how that is for recoil before getting anything that will kick harder.

Handcannon since you liked the idea of the 416 Rem Mag - you might be interested in the 30-378 Wby Mag listed as an in stock item by Reeder Custom, unless of course you already have one.  Check it out http://www.reedercustomguns.com/information/in_stock.htm

As you all know, I am a real lover of the big handcannons - own a whole bunch of them.   Well, I got to test fire the first 10" 416 Rigby Encore that was made (Bullberry) - was enough for me.

I shot the wildest caliber ever on saturday.  50-70 case shortened shooting a humongous 50 caliber bullet out of an encore barrel.   He was showing the loaded round to the guys at a silhouette match.  I thought it was a joke until afterward.  Only went 700 fps, but dropped a sihouette ram with authority.  If any wild elephants go tromping thru tri-cities, I guess he will be ready.  wow!!

Steve ;you sure it was not a 50AE case necked up to .510 for the 50BMG bullet(50 American Eagle from SSk).I have a 50-70-750 from SSK 18" barrel and with a 650gr bullet it does 1100fps.Sounds like 700fps slow unless he is shooting a very heavy bullet. If that is the case i would like to know what load he is using because I would like to try heavy bullets. Thanks alot Wade

Wade-had one of them SSK .50 American Eagles

It was an 11 1/4" stainless with a brake that JD said he did specifically for the chambering. Shot some 700 AP slightly over 1000fps. Wish I tried shooting it at 100 yards, but at 50 yards with a 2X Leupold, it would easily do 1" groups. It always shot 1/2" one shot groups!  :) A buddy modified the barrel to also take rimmed 500 Linebaugh cases slightly trimmed. Originally asked JD to do a 500 Linebaugh Encore barrel, with the same twist as the .50 American Eagle, but he wouldn't do it. Because of the long throat, I was able to shoot my 470 grain bullets from my 500 Linebaugh revolver, and seated it longer than a .500 Maximum OAL. Jay Turner told me he did an article on the 50-70-750 14" contender a while back. I don't recall the exact load I used for the 700 AP bullets, but it was with H110. It sure was a fun barrel, and recoil wasn't as bad as I expected! Only reason I sold it, was because the Encore trigger reach was just a little too long for my short fingers.

Congratulations handcannon, can't wait to see how the shooting goes with this one.  I would guess that a trip to Mag-na-port may be in order for this bad boy, just my opinion.  Have you decided what to do for sights on this - are you going to try to scope it or stick with open sights?  From the ebay description, it sounds like you better have your medical insurance paid up before shooting it :) .  Good luck! :D
