Cleaning
« on: November 04, 2008, 06:46:04 AM »
Each year I go to the range to check my Encore before hunting... As in years past the first shot was 3 inch's low and an inch to the right..Still well in the kill zone @ 100yds..then it go's to 2.5 inch's high and 3 hole's touching I runa wet patch with T/C #13 bore cleaner and 2 dry patch'e flipped between each shot. With very good accuracy...then I go home tear it all down and clean it to put it away..Then question that first shot accuracy...How clean does ithave to be to protect it while waiting for the season to open..I use T7 and T7 primers. I have read here that on or to guy's left their's from last season without damage..so they say anyway. But how long can you leave a T/C ss Encore with residue in it without damage. Inside in the gun cabinet...Or would a wet patch with 2 dry flipped patch's be clean enough for a couple week's. I sure dount want to do anything to harm my gun. Thanks Drop

I never left any corrosive powder residue in my ML rifles, not even overnight.  777 is less  corrosive then some powders but it is corrosive. If it was non-corrosive they would be advertising it that way. The best solution to this problem is to use non-corrosive powder, now that it is available.

I have given away my 777 (loose & pellets) and my JSG. I switched to BlackHorn 209 which is non-corrosive so I can leave the bore fouled all season if I like. It also does not require cleaning between shots and does not attract/absorb humidity. I have also found it to be very accurate in my ProHunter 209x50.

Yeah - it cost more but IMO it is well worth the additional cost. I'm sold on BH 209.

Droptine, I've been wondering the same thing. I agree that Blackhorn is the way to go here, but I'm curious if firing a primer or 2, or even 3 before storage or at least before taking the gun out hunting might even things out inside the barrel? Anyone do this? I haven't got out to try it yet but I will the next few times I shoot to see if it works any.

In other words, clean the gun and store it as you normally would. When you take it out to hunt/shoot, run a dry patch to clean out the bore butter fire a few primers and swab with a dry patch. Then load and shoot. What do you guys think? Will this help? ???

I called the people at Hogdon powder 777 today..The person there tellsme to do as I have been doing but to clean the gun with    windex with vinegar  and to store it with a light swab of bore butter..then when I am ready to shoot the first shot swab it out good with the windex. He says that will make the bore dry and the first shot should be right there with the other's. I am going to try this out in the next few day's. I havent got it cleaned since yesterday. I was going to clean it up tonight..But I ran my hand in to my broadhead this evening while hunting... It was so cool..I had 2 deer within 12 yards of me on the ground..And I was wearing a long sleeve navy blue t shirt an faded blu jeans...I could hear the blood dripping from my hand on the leaves...didnt hurt to bad..But i didnt wanna spook the deer either.. They got a little nervous and left..So I am goung to run a bore butter patch through it tonight and I already wiped it down..Then in the am I am going to get me some vinegar windex and clean it up then in a couple days I am goint to take her back to the range. The man at &&& says to not use bore cleaner at the range between shot" as it doesnt dry fast enough to give a consistant bore. Make's sense. She sure is one bad old girl @ 100 to 150 yds though.... Keep em coming.Drop
