guns and walmart...
« on: November 02, 2008, 08:04:46 AM »
i just read the thread about ordering from walmart, and i went to the walmart guns section on their website, but i could not find any h&r, other than a topper.  am i looking in the wrong place?  in the single shot rifle section, i only saw one tc encore.
and my other question is the walmart nearest me stopped selling guns.  is this a weird event that just happed here, or are alot of walmarts stopping there gun sales?  i havent been to any other, so maybe the others near here are still selling...
thanks for any help!
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

They don't list them on the public access site, but I have a bunch of their links saved, whatcha looking for specifically? They no longer list prices, so it doesn't help much, each store apparently has their own price point. Basically you have to order at a store that stocks fireams using the item number and UPC from their catalog pages which are posted in the FAQs. Most Walmarts no longer carry firearms, only those that met a annual threshold in sales continue to sell them, I only know of one store out of 8 within 40 miles of me that still carries firearms, use their store finder to find stores and make calls to find out if any still sell them. http://www.walmart.com/

Im only on here in fall/winter, I remember posting a year ago
we had a few Walmarts still selling fire arms in SE WI. Now a
year later all the stores regionaly that I have called or I know
others have visited are no longer selling fire arms as far as I
can tell (Milw/Richfield/Oak Creek/Janesville areas).

Sportsman warehouse has picked up there loss in sales around
here, It's hard to believe SE WI sales are slow enough to be the
reason for not selling? Our local Gander,Sportsman warehouse
and Cabela's are wall to wall people for SEP thru JAN filling out
buyer paperwork and there stock now entering Nov is low on most
everything. One 204 Ultra Vamint fluted on the shelf at $275, I just
bought there last 223 Ultra Varmint fluted in stock at $324.

I'm sure there are other factors that WalMart management considered when they discontinued firearm sales in those stores that locals would assume would have had good sales, but those others new stores such as Sportsman's and Gander may also have been part of the reason for the Walmart changes. Unfortunately, Sportsman's, Gander, Cabelas, Dick's and Bass Pro don't have stores everywhere, in fact many states don't have any of them or are very few and far between.

People are going to believe what they want.  WalMart told us in the stores that it is only going to quit selling guns in certain stores.  We don't sell........soccer cleats at all stores either.  As a matter of fact in the shoe department if our store is traited as Hispanic market then we get shipping more small size shoes because Hispanics have smaller feet.  Look, I am not making this up.  Distribution is a science.  Do I take ANY corporate announcement with a grain of salt, sure.  I don't even believe the President of the US anymore.  We live in a cynical world.

Do you want to make WalMart the boogieman, then go ahead.  I will never change your mind because you have an axe to grind.  You are pro-union, or got fired as a cartpusher, or we sell Chinese goods, whatever.  You don't like WalMart then don't shop there.  You want to blame WalMart for Mom and Pop's business failure, then knock yourself out.  It is called Capitalism.  Capitalism only seems to be a problem once a business reaches a certain size, ie Microsoft.

As to the affluent market question:WalMart wants to go after Target right now.  Why?  Target does 1/100th the business that we do.  Why would you want to model yourself after your unsuccessful competition?  Don't know.  Ask the Man in Bentonville.

I fail to see the logic in everyone believing that WalMart will quit selling firearms.  There are no Gander Mountains, Cabelas, or Bass Pros in rural Oklahoma, Minnesota, Arkansas, and other places that I am familiar with.  If your WalMart in the city quit selling guns, I am sorry.  If your WalMart that is 30 minutes away from a large WalMart Supercenter quit selling guns then I am sorry.

I am not trying to be a jerk.  The fact is that a lot of people are talking about this in "Northern" states where WalMart culture doesn't carry very well.  Read the column by George Will.  Got news for everyone:  poor people shop at WalMart.  Part of the new drive at WalMart is to get the affluent shopper who rarely sets foot in WalMart.  The way the company sees it is there are everyday shoppers (all clothes, groceries, consumables, entertainment), occassional consumables kind of shoppers (dog food, detergent, etc), and rare shoppers (one visit in blue moon).  For most of us out in the Styx, WalMart is the only game in town (yeah, because we squashed the little man, yah, yah).  There are 3 supermarkets in our little Oklahoma town.  None of them can compete for variety.  The produce and meat are better at my store.  We are cleaner.  We are convenient-I can buy my wife a card, a goldfish, ammo, and socks all in one stop.  WalMart's bread and butter are the rural stores.  Hopefully, they in Bentonville won't lose sight of that.  But, in any event, people in the country buy guns and ammo more than the ones in the city.

In an urban market, if we can use retail space for....fishing lures, or wakeboards, or golf clubs and make more money then we will.  WalMart is a business and I am sorry if it inconveniences you personally, with your interest in firearms.  But, maybe more people in your area would prefer skateboards to guns.

I am just a little guy.  I am not a VP or Director of anything.  Be logical, take anything that a company says with a grain of salt and realize too that this is about business.  If anyone wants my philosophical position on WalMart then I will post that too.  Otherwise, just don't shop there if you don't like WalMart, but grind your axes somewhere else.

I live in Southern Illinois. Our local Wal Mart still sells guns.  The nearest Cabelas and Bass Pro Shop (St.Louis,MO) is about 100 miles,  the nearest Gander Mountain (Paducah, KY) is about 110 miles.

Sure hope that folks don't think that new firearms are big profit items.  Most sticker prices carry a 10% profit factor, if that.  Lots of them carry protected pricing packages, so there isn't much wiggle room.  A shop can make more "profit" from selling a couple of used guns, usually, than from 3 new ones.   So if you don't sell used ones, then figure what that floor space costs to maintain.  If you make a better return on chrome plated widgets than a rack of weapons, guess where the $ goes....  Some times the lowest price may not be the bargain you thought it was.    Find a stocking dealer while you can.  2009 is just around the corner.
Will that bow kill an elk?     Sure.....but arrows are much more effective.

My local Wal-Mart is still selling firearms, the other two stores with end 20 miles stopped selling guns at the first of the year, I went in today a very rare thing for me but my wife made me, they had about 40 plus long guns on display and a big stock of ammo, they had the big-bore nef handi-rifles for 239.00 wood stocks, black stocks 259.00, the man told me they were going up about 10.00 to 12.00 per gun on next shipment, but the best thing i saw was they had a full line of Winchester white box ammo in stock rifle and handgun rounds, I bought some 223 46 gr., varmint loads,

Our WINCHESTER VA store still sells long guns.
I don't recall seeing any hand guns though.
We have a CABELAS and five gun shops within a two mile radius and a DICKS is coming soon.
With Cabelas prices there is no worry for WALMART.
Their prices are crazy, way to high.
Same goes for ammo.
None of the gun shops are too worried over WALMART.
WALMART only keeps about twenty in stock.
I have only ever been in one DICKS and their prices were as bad as Cabelas.

Like the man said "THEY STOCK WHAT SELLS".
That's only good business.

I think I will continue to shop at my favorite CANDY SHOP!

Tim, yes the wwb 223 are 45 gr. jhp, my miss type, they were 24.96 per box of 40, Remington 55 gr. fmj was about 9.50 for a box of 20, I bought two boxes of remington 550 count boxes of 22 L.R., some 30-06 rem., 150 core-lokt, a box of Rem. 30-30 170 gr core-lokt, and a box of Winchester 308 150 gr., Power-Points, I don't need any of this ammo but from I am hearing its just going up in price, I think this will be the last time for a while my wife makes go me go to wal-mart.

I am not sure why ammo would be going up. Copper is down, lead is down and transportation costs are down. If any thing I would think that ammo and reloading supplies would drop, but I would not hold my breath. It seems that when things go up in price, they never go back down, even when costs are down.

The Walmarts will still sell everything else but the guns when it stops. I think for the most part all the shuffling around of the stores that do and those that don't has taken place over the last 2 or 3 yrs and is all but done unless the GOV screws something up. Kurt
