Best Grips for Ruger GP100
« on: June 26, 2007, 12:43:36 PM »
I'm trying to decide whether I want aftermarket grips on my GP100, 6" barrel. I'm undecided between the standard Hogue rubber grips versus the recoil tamer grips. In the case of both, there is no exposed backstrap, so that is not a problem, but I wonder which grip is preferred by whom and why. I also am considering digging up a pair of Butler Creek (formerly Uncle Mike's), which were my first preference, but it has been almost impossible to find any. I know they have been discontinued, but I haven't seen any used ones on the auction sites either. Last, but not least, I already have a pair of Pachmayr Grippers, but they don't seem to fit really well and move around even if the screw is tight.

I've never really cared for Hogues before due to the open backstrap and the way they had that high piece of rubber on the side opposite the cylinder release side. I notice with the GP100. they are shaped the same on both sides. I also notice that the recoil tamer grips seem to be a little larger due to the padding in the back.

If you had your choice between leaving the factory grips on, or installing the standard Hogue or the recoil tamer Hogue, or the Butler Creek grips, what would/have you chosen?

I know this is much ado about nothing, but that is what makes these forums interesting.

Thanks,

Steve

I used my GP-100 as a teaching gun, mostly for women and kids, so I put a Pachmayr Compac grip on it, probably the smallest grip you can get for it.  I have fairly small hands but long fingers, so it was comfortable for me as well, and the kids and women with small hands loved it.  It was also handy for concealed carry, since long barrels don't matter, but big butts do.  A lot of the grips choices are tied to the size of your hands, plus how the gun will be carried.  Most Hogue grips are too big for me, but can easily whittled down to a shape that fits better.  I have been known to spend an afternoon on the front porch with a sanding block, assorted grades of sandpaper, and a pistol, and a few hours later I've removed everything that didn't fit my hand.  Hard kickers are a lot more comfortable with soft rubber, but wooden grips that fit your hand very well can be a much better-looking solution.  Another consideration is that if the gun is for CCW, clothing tends to stick and snag on the rubber grips, where it will glide right over a smooth wooden grip without printing.

Whatever you do, try before you buy.  If your hand doesn't like it, you won't either, and your scores and groups will show it!

I'm sorry, but I love the standard Ruger grips that come on the GP100 and the SP101. I think they are feel great, and I really like the smooth feel of the wooden inserts. I wouldn't change at all.

Yup. I claim no expert status on it and both look and feel are very personal matters but to me the factory grips on them both look and feel as good as any to me. I really think Ruger got it right with their factory grips on these guns at least for my hands and eyes.

also, are they larger than the compac grips for the sp101?  Can't find them on the Pachmayr website, but have seen some privately for sale.

The factory grips on my 6" GP100 are just fine for me...Like Bill said, I think that Ruger got it right with the factory grips with the inserts.  I purchased some aftermarket Green Stabilized Spalted Maple grip inserts for my Ruger...Check'em out.

Whitetailer,

Where did you get your inserts? I would like to get some for a SP101, however, Ruger has quit offering them for this model. So I gotta go somewhere else.

I did a test on my 6" GP. I tried a pair of Pachmayr grippers, a pair of Uncle Mike's and the factory grips, checking each for feel and trigger reach. The factory grips had the best (shortest) trigger reach of those tried, so I put them back on the gun. My guess it that the Hogue grips would also have a short trigger reach, but I don't like the finger grooves.

There, scientific proof that the factory grips are the best. My sympathy to anybody who buys a new GP and gets the Hogues on it.

In my simple logic I go with what grip fits me the best and I base purchasing decisions on whether or not I can put a set of hogue grips on them.  I have large hands and I know it helps me shoot better.  I bought my GP100 with the regular Hogue rubber grips and then changed them to the hogue tamer grips.  The tamer does make a little difference and I really like them, but it's different for everyone so whatever floats your boat.

Why the secrecy on the grips? Why not tell us in the open??
