.25 acp breech plug
« on: October 15, 2008, 09:06:32 AM »
Hello all,

I have a quick question for all of those using the .25 acp breech plug conversion. Are/have there been any issues with weather guarding? With the factory primer carriers the orange tab sticks out as a handle but also helps seal up the primer from the elements. So converting to the new plug has me concerned about exposure to the elements, especially using a small rifle/pistol primer that does not have near the juice a 209 has in incliment weather. So even if I could make/find a breech plug that would hold a 209 primer without the carrier, I feel that weather could still be a problem because ther is nothing blocking the hole that is normally filled by the handle on the primer carrier. Not to mention what else could get in there when your out in the woods (we all know that crazy things can happen out there  ;D.

Just looking for some feed back/input.

Thanks,
walmpus

Walmpus; If I myself was concerned about moisture I would place a small amout of vasiline around the 25acp brass and then insert in breachplug. I would be more worried about water coming down the muzzle. I have two muzzleloaders with this breachplug but never had to get um' wet. Hope this helps.   Jenks

The way the .25ACP brass fits in the breechplug it is a "crush fit". In other words the front end of the brass is wedged in a tapered section of the breechplug and slightly compressed when installed correctly. As such the tendency for moisture to get past the forward end of the brass into the powder is nearly impossible. As far as the breechface portion of the .25ACP brass to primer fit there is likely no way any water can get through the primer to brass interface. I doubt you could submerge it for any time like the Knight ads but it is pretty well water resistant.

Problem with 25 acp misfires
« Reply #3 on: October 16, 2008, 10:42:35 AM »
I've used my Huntsman 24" and 209s for several years with success, great accuracy, reliability, etc. but more blow back than I like. So, I bought one of the 25 acp breechplugs and tested her out. Used small rifle primers, as recommended and 80gr 777. Of 12 attempts, I had 4 misfires where the primer detonated but the 777 did not. This is not good. Any suggestions for correcting this? Otherwise it is back to 209s.

best,          nrb

Use magnum primers.

I use a piece of electrical tape or duct tape to cover the opening for the 209 primer carrier. Stick it on the receiver and fold it over to cover the opening. Never had a problem. I use Remington 7 1/2 or CCI 450 primers with the ACP brass.

nrb, I think the problem you have could be from not pushing the bullet down hard enough to compress the powder or blockage in the breechplug. Just some suggestions for you.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I do compress my loose powder and bullet but I have not tried magnum primers.

I thought 25  ACP shells could only accept small pistol and small rifle
primers.  I thought magnum primers were larger and too big to fit ?

Small rifle magnum primers are the same size as standard primers; if they were not how would they work in rifle brass? There are small rifle, small pistol, large rifle and large pistol primers. Magnum primers in all these cases are exactly the same size just a lot more power in the primer material. The two sizes small and large are different but that is the only difference.
