The mother in law doesn't come until tomorrow now, so we went out this morning. 

I managed to fill my whitetail antlerless tag!  We will have meat thsi winter.  Gotta get the wife  a deer and then I can trophy hunt.

Way to go there Douglas... I could not get out today with this shoulder of mine.  I had been awake most to the night, and my wife gave me a muscle relaxer to help me get some sleep.  I am planning on doing some hunting on thursday, so we will see what happens.  Good shooting there Douglas.

Have you seen the picture of the freezer full of meat and the caption  "Trophy Room"   I'm an unrepentant meat hunter.

Now just what excuse can I use for the next two and a half weeks to get out of honey do's if I am meat hunting.  That could be over in a day or two.   Then when I fill the second tag on the last day of season with an old fat doe, I can always say next year I'll get the big one.

There is nothing wrong with meat hunting and there is nothing with trophy hunting.

Last time I got a buck with horns, it was a big bodied fork-horn muley and that was several years ago.  Have used A-tags for yearlings or does since.  The 14 year-old boy did get a nice muley buck last night.  His first deer ever, boy is he happy and sad.   Happy he got the buck, sad cause he got it so quick.  I told them to get B-tags, but they got White-tail tags and we don't have any white tails on or around our land.  Have to see if FWP has anymore mulie b-tags left for 400 area for him.  I filled 3 b-tags and we both got a turkey.  Had to make 2-270 mile round trips to Billings to get the deer in before they spoiled as the weather was way to hot.  Nice for camping though.  Best of luck to all.  DP

I know what you mean by sad, I did that one year.... on the opener I got my tag filled.  This year I am taking my time as I can do this, but for those that live in tightly urbanized areas like in Billings, Helena, Great Falls and or Missoula for them it's not just a hope skip and a jump to go hunting as it requires proper planning and driving.

For whitetail around the Flathead Valley, I really do not have much traveling to do or far to go.

So this year I am taking my time to find the biggest whitetail buck I can and with my doe tags find the biggest does.

Here is a spike I let walk yesterday as he was in my handgun sights, but I let him walk as we are trying to manage the deer on my uncles spread better than he has in the past.  This year I am the only hunter allowed, and so we really want to watch them grow bigger.  When I first saw him he was like 20 or so yards, then moved.  I call him "Lucky Buck" because he lingered for so long and offered me several very good broadside shots.
