300 whisper carbine
« on: November 25, 2008, 11:58:15 PM »
I am thinking about buying a 300 whisper contender carbine barrel for my 7 year old neice to hunt with. Is it hard to make the cases??? and would a 125 grain ballistic tip work for deer out to 125 yards???? She is shooting a 7-30 waters now and it has alot of muzzleblast....thanks Robbie

If you're a reloader, why not work up a reduced load for the Waters. I had a 10" Whisper for a little while and was not terribly impressed with the lack of blast and recoil.  Of course a carbine barrel would tame significantly.  I can tell you for certain that the 125gr BT is "Deer Deadly", at least in my Herret and 30-30AI, and I'm sure it would be in the Whisper as well.
BTW, If you're loading your Waters with a ball powder, just going to a stick powder may reduce the blast considerably. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  :)

I would look for a .357 max contender carbine.  The 300 is anemic.  I have one.  Not realy impressive.  Would do a deer; however, a pig would test it.  The max can do more and could do a pig.  The recoil in a carbine would be manageable.

case forming is a snap when using 221 Fireball brass..just run it through the sizing die.  If you decide to use .223 then you have to trim then resize..major pain..though I have probably done around 300 that way.  SSK sells both formed brass and the dies..If you ever want to do sub-sonic you will need a SSK barrel.  My 14" is a T/C Custom Shop and it is a shooter!  the 125 BT is the bullet recommended by J.D.Jones.  Why don't you give J.D. a call and discuss your concerns with him..I find him to really helpful.
