Which model???
« on: November 05, 2008, 07:51:08 AM »
I got a question for ya, when it comes down to the models what really is the difference?  Like with the handi and the ultras.  Also with the ultras what really is the difference between the hunter and the varmint?  I am going to get another probably in the next couple of weeks and I don't really know what i want yet.  I am fond of the heavy barrels but just want a plain walnut or synthetic stock.

I for some reason really want a 308 for mostly target shooting.  I plan on buying another whole gun and then with the two that i will have i can get some extra barrels, Like a 30-30 and 223 probably.  I already have a 243 ultra varmint with the thumbhole stock and i love it.

Woods stocked Handis come with walnut stained hardwood stocks as opposed to Ultras which have checkered resin laminated stocks, other than barrel contours and lengths, that's the only difference. Ultra Hunters have standard contour 22" barrels, Varmints are longer and bull barrels usually. All of the descriptions are on the H&R website.

The only way to get a new bull barrel 308 is to buy a Survivor or have an accessory barrel added to your frame. The only walnut stocks come on the Buffalo Classics and the Topper Deluxe Classic, but all stock will fit all frames, so you can mix and match all your want as I do, a lot of stocks are sold/swapped in the classifieds, so if you don't have what you want, you can always get there!!  ;)

I have never had my hands on a survivor before, but I guess I Could just change the stock.  I really like the look of the Choate varmint stocks.

Tim arn't you afraid that they will fall like dominoes?  and why do you have them resting on the pointy end?

Keeps oil and crud from ending up on the latch mechanism.
I store mine like that too.

Nope, I have vinyl tubing covered sheetrock screws in the wall every other gun or so to keep that from happening. 8)

What Spanky said, I've always stored my muzzleloaders muzzle down to keep oil from collecting in the breech, works the same for Handis to keep oil off of the latch shelf and latch which any Handiholic should know is bad for business!! ;D Some old timers did the same to keep gun oil from soaking the stocks... gravity... ya know.  ;)

Gavity, it's not just a good idea, it's the LAW!!! ;D

I have to keep mine in a gun safe because of the grandkids, and had never thought of this.  But i think that I'll spend some time this evening turning them all upside down.  Thanks for the enlightenment!
