I have had a 44mag of one type or another for years, I have shot a few deer and stuff
with it, but I always really considered it a gun not a hunting tool really. When I wanted
to use a handgun for hunting I'd grab the contender. Today I saw the error of my ways
and the real power of the 44mag.
I won't say how far the shot was, but I had a mule deer doe just standing there quartering
toward me just waiting to see what I was going to do. So I wadded up my coat got the 44
dug into it solid, put the crosshair on the point of her shoulder and squeezed one off.
I lost her for a second in the recoil, but found her quick she made two hops and piled up.
The 240gr XTP went in right in the front of the shoulder and exited the off side hindquarter!
That big ole slow slug plowed basically the full length of a 200lb muley and apparently had no
intentions of slowing down.
To say I was impressed would be an understatement, I guess the novelty has wore off and
my SRH has earned a place as one of my favorite hunting tools.

Well I decided that I was going to use the SRH exclusively this deer season, and so far I
haven't regretted the choice. Ok its a little bit of a disadvantage on moving or long shots,
but anything within 200yds that will give me time to get a rest is in the back of the truck.
I know, I know 200 yds is too far for a 44mag, but I can keep them all on a paper plate
at that range and it is exactly where my crosshair tapers so I ain't guessing holdover.
I have filled all 5 of my doe tags with it so far, just holding out for a good buck still have a week.
