Quick 22-250 question
« on: November 09, 2008, 02:03:09 PM »
I put a 22-250 flutted bull barrel on my Buffalo classic several months ago.  Been shooting mostly cast bullets after breaking it in with jacketed (getting pretty good groups also).  Last night I loaded up some more jacketed, below book max loads.  Shows no sign of pressure accept it takes just about all my might to push the latch to open the barrel after I shoot it.  I also noticed every once and a while it will not latch closed no matter how hard I slam it.  I had to bring one home unfired because I could not get the barrel to latch.  I need to put on my glasses and see if it left any marks on the case.

Do I have a problem?

Maybe lead build up in the bore could be causing high pressures which would explain the sticky latch release, it's one of the "Handi" pressure signs. Check the latch for cracks/defects, there have been several reported lately. Other than that, not full length resizing brass can prevent the action from closing all the way.

thanks Tim.  All the lead is cleaned out everytime I shoot, fact is I never find any lead on the patch because I am shooting 1800-2000 fps speeds and running gas checks on water quenched (hardened) bullets.

I will back off on the pressure a little.  Roger on the full length resizing, The brass shoot 1 load of jacketed (to fire size the brass), then around 3 loads of lead (read low pressure) with only neck sizing every time with the lee collect die.  This could be it.

I am going to probably throw away the loading records on the 55 grain bullets I was shooting, they seemed to heavy, the faster I pushed them the better they shot until I started to hit pressure problems.  Got to get some lighter ones for this 1 in 12 twist.

Two other things to check. COAL and BRASS OAL although in a Handi that brass would need to be mighty long for most guns.

Just tonight I was loading up some 308's and found the leade quite short. I ended up having to seat the bullet deeper than I expected. (I like to keep them .005-7 off the rifeling)

Is this a custom rechamber ? Are you sure you got a 1-12 twist bbl? I thought the 22-250's were all 1-14" but stranger things have happened. Kurt

Sometimes on the break actions you have to just bump the shoulder on reloading.  If you only neck size on the last three reloads, this could be your problem.  You may only get to neck size every other time.  .001" growth x 3 = .003" and that could be enough to keep you from closing the action.  Check your sized brass and make sure they fit before you reload them.

I think your right on the 1-14".  I could not remember for sure.
I will try to do a full resize next reload.
