Very impressed with this M44
« on: November 05, 2008, 01:10:31 PM »
I bought an arsenaly re-finished M44 a couple months ago and finaly had some time to do some hand loads for it.  I am using a .308 SPEER 150gr spitzer loaded with 38.4 grains of IMR 4895.  I worked this up based on allot of peoples favorite deer rounds for the .308.  I am getting a 5 inch group at 100 yards with open sights.  Deer season here I come!

Your accuracy probably would improve with either the Speer 150 gr .311 or the Hornady 150 gr .312 diameter bullets and an increase in powder charge to around 46 gr of 4895.  If your M44 is in any kind of reasonable condition then 2-3" groups or better is quite the norm with those bullets and that load.  At any rate, good luck hunting.

I went with the .308 because thats all the re-load data I could find had as a prejectile.  I haven't slugged my barrel so I stayed with the smaller projectile than the larger .311 or .312.

I bought 2 with my C&R, one for me, one for a friend.

I picked the pretty one.

Mine shoots about a minute of pie plate (6"). His shoots a nice sub 2" group at 100 with Privi Partizen ammo.

I think next time I will try out both before choosing one. I will also remember pretty isn't always the best reason to choose.

Oh well,
mike

You mean, "I bought two for myself and then sold one to a friend to help improve my collection"
