Ithica model 37 deerslayer.

Looking for comments from owners.
Is your barrel smooth or rifled?
How well do you like it? have you compaired it to another brand, say a Remington 870?

The model 37 is a fantastic gun.
I grew up borrowing/shooting my older brothers all the time.
He currently owns 7 of them in varied guages and barrel configurations.
I have been actively looking for a decent specimen for the gun room. The new Model 37 Deerslayer II & III are so similar to the older version it is scary. I may end up going that way.

They have several used model 37's and the deer slayer. I have bought several rifles and shot guns from them and they stand behind them.

I own a 12ga. 37 featherlite and a 20ga. 37 featherlite. Owned them since the early 1970's

Trying to get information on a deer slayer though. Wondering about having the barrel done so I can install rifled choke tubes.

The Ithica Deer Slayer was the gun that all others were compared to. It was THE slug gun. Even today the owner of Ithica deer Slayers are envied among the smooth bore slug shooters.

I have shot the old 37 and own a new (relative term) 87 Featherlight (got it in 87).

They are the smoothest pump action available. They are awesome accurate for smooth bore.

The newer ultralight II is a better dedicated deer rifle wih montecarlo stock and permament mouned barallel.

I typicaly use WInchester 1oz slugs because they are cheap and most shots fall between 20 - 60 yards. I shoot a 2.5x scope n a saddle mount (which reuires a cheek piece to shoot well on the stock).

The 37 is a lighter gun and miserable to shoot with slugs. They are also not 3" mag compatible.

I'v never found 3'' shells to be necessary in a 12ga. The tried and true 2 3/4  have taken everything you can hunt in this country.

got my ithaca back in the 70"s(present from dad) with 28 in barrel,  but always wanted the deerslayer barrel....never found one at a gun show or from someone i knew......several years back i found 1 on e bay(back when e bay allowed gun stuff) and got it for 80 bucks....one of the best gun parts i have bought...24 inch smoothbore......was going to put a scope on gun but when i shot it with iron sights there was no need to scope it........anyy deer within 100 yds is ddead ,  though the several i have shot with it have been within 40......drops them......i use it in thick cutovers where i dont want the deer to run.....i use remmington 1 oz sluggers....code on boxes is sp12rs............mack

just saw where i misssed the first time that efremtags said the 37 's recoil was miserable with slugs...........yes, yes yes, but once it is sighed in i dont  feel the recoil when hunting...1 shot........but again i do not want to sight it in again.......thats why i bought a boatload of the same lot of remmington sp12rs......mack

I have a 37 Deerslayer Love it . I seems to like Remington Sluggers and time Winchester foster type slug equally as well.  the younger crowd will give you the look when i get it out at the range. smooth bore 2 3/4  not camo. can't be much.. Till I put a couple slugs on a paper plate a 100 yards,  Love mine won't trade it or GIVE IT  UP while I'm still breathing.
