Stocks & Recoil pads
« on: November 06, 2008, 04:28:37 PM »
Does anyone know if the Choate Synthetic stocks and the H&R Synthetic stocks are one and the same or near enough that recoil pads for one will fit the other.  The reason I ask is when shooting hot loads in my 45 Colt BC it can get bad on the shoulder real fast at the bench.  Thought I would try a synthetic stock with a recoil pad as I didn't want to cut the BC stock to install a recoil pad.  Plus if I passed the gun along or sold it I would still have the original.  So I ordered a Choate standard stock but the recoil pad is about as hard as the steel butt plate on the BC stock.   Was thinking of a pre-fit Limbsaver if they are interchangeable.  Thanks....................

Choate makes all of the synthetic stocks for H&R, except possibly the new checkered style, dunno about it yet. A Limbsaver #10018 prefit is made for the synthetic monte carlo stock, got one on my 20ga Turkey gun.  ;)

Thanks............ that was my suspicion after looking at the stock I received from Choate but I wasn't sure.  According to the Limpsaver site it says the #10018 is made for "H&R Handi-Rifle Adult Synthetic and Monte Carlo Stock", so it looks like that is just what the doctor ordered.   Again.....thanks.

Yep, I have one on my non-monte carlo syn stock.  Works great!

I put 36 ounces of number 4 shot in a sock and stuffed it in the synthetic stock on my '06.  It's heavy, but shoots like a .22.  It slings better and also, for me, it's better balanced.  That may solve the problem without the recoil pad.  I'm going to do the same with my .45-70.  Pete

If you don't want to add the extra weight, just put the Limbsaver on.  I put a slip on on my son's 30/30 handi for him, and wow what a difference.  I plan on putting one on my Mossberg 835 and my Swiss K31.  My son, who is 10, can now shoot all day with the 30/30.

I have a wood stock with the standard recoil pad and shoot a pretty Hot&Heavy load (360gr 1575 fps) out of my .45 and it feels like a .410 28ga. I made that load for 75yrd but it is shootin less than 2" at 100 can't wait to get to work on some of them lighter bullets and 2000+ fps. Kurt

The new limbsaver pads go a LONG way to taming stiff recoil. You will be happy once you try one!!

I have them on most of my "kickers" and have been very satisfied.

Has anyone put a limbsaver on an ultra laminated stock, if so what model did you use?
I don't want to use a slip-on pad.

By the way - This is a great site for information. My first handi was a ultra in 243 and it had trouble ejecting the fired case. After reading a few posts and the FAQ, I polished the chamber and solved the problem. It will shoot 3/4" groups at 100 yards all day. Next I got a 44mag for it and it is a shooter. Now I have a 45-70 and would like a better recoil pad. The 45-70 is a little stout shooting in shirt sleeves here in Mississippi.

There is one that is close, but not perfect.

I now use the grind-to-fit med size exclusively. Easy to do with a belt sander/disc sander and a jig from Brownells. This is one I just added to a H&R lam stock.

I have several Limbsavers on H&R laminated stocks, and couple Decelarators, most are the small grind-to-fit, but also have a couple prefits, those that may fit are listed in the FAQs.  ;)

I have limbsavers on a couple other rifles and a shotgun and I absolutely love them but my grind to fit jobs I've attempted leave a lot to be desired.  If you ever see some of my work you'd understand why I want a prefit if possible.  Even using my belt sander I mess them up...... maybe just to impatient of using to course of a belt.

Read the info on the Limbsaver site, using WD40 when grinding and then freezing the pad for the final finish makes a BIG difference in the whatcha end up with.  ;)

Thanks for the link but what does the W-D 40 do?  First time I heard of using that on a belt sander sanding paper or any sanding paper for that matter.  Use to always water wet sand cars when getting ready to paint them but this is a first on  using something on a belt sander.

It lubricates the pad for easier shaping.  ;)

My thought has always been that the WD40 or any light oil lubricates the pad.  Otherwise, the pad melts from friction or at least softens up.  Then chunks tear off instead of being abraded.

Without oil I get "feathering" is the best way that I can describe it.

I agree with Quick.  Freezing for the final work makes huge difference.  The pads become stiff and again, they abrade without stretching and tearing.

Might be a little late to mention it but I made a wooden insert for my lace on leather pad that fits the curve of the steel plate for the BC.  Put it in the pad when I tie it on and the recoil is much better. think the gun was shifting back when fired. Like not having it flush against your shoulder.

That's the problem on the pads I attempted to work on.  Now I know what the problem was.  Guess an old dog can be taught new tricks.
