eat crow ye nay sayers!  i picked it up yesterday. i think i'm gonna like this baby real well. feels really good in the hand. took it apart and worked the trigger spring as soon as i got to the house. who said they were never gonna make em? sad that they had to discontinue the original, but i think i can live with it a little easier now. 8)

Kyode, would you be kind enough to tell us just a bit about the disassembly procedure and what you did to the spring?  It would be helpful, I'm sure.

Thanks.

Boy, i'll say. I like the old stlye Contender. I have had little to no problems with my original and I think they are a great hunting package.

The original was a great gun.

G2 or original, they're a classic.  I haven't seen the G2 yet, but then I'm so happy with my old one that I don't really want a G2.  I'm glad they are living up to expectactions.

How's the trigger? Did it need any adjustment or tuning?

i'm not good at stuff like that, but it's easy as it can be, even for a non mechanically inclined feller like me.
i did one of my encore frames first. the G2 is very similar.
all i did was remove one screw that holds in the trigger guard. it has just a few threads on one end and then pushes out easily with a 3/32" punch. the trigger guard then comes off. this leaves the trigger shoe dangling alone. then i pushed out another 3/32" pin that holds the trigger shoe itself. again the pin just pushes out easily, and no beating is required. the trigger itself comes out of the frame. then looking down into the frame, you see the trigger spring. it has an L shaped end that hooks in a hole in the trigger shoe. just take a flat screw driver and shove the end of the exposed spring down toward the inside of the frame. thereby just weakening or stretching the trigger spring. reassemble and test. the G2 spring seemed to weaken easier than the encore. the encore, i pushed 4 times to get the pull i wanted. the G2, i pushed twice and it was too light. the hammer would not cock. i readjusted but it's still really light. i would just push down on the spring once and test.
it's really easy, and i learned it  from sixgun or maybe jeff vicars(i forget). i have a replacement bellm spring, but didn't even use it. that would involve going deeper into the frame, and i figured i'd try this first. so far, so good.
i'd say my G2 is about 1 1/2 lbs or so. 2-3lbs would be light enough for hunting, in my opinion.
hope this helps. it only takes a few minutes for the whole procedure, and almost anyone should be able to do it.  :music:

I tried it last night, KYODE, and it worked.  You didn't mention we needed to get that tiny spring contained in the trigger under the trigger guard pin...     My G2 didn't need much correction, so I pushed down only once and not very far - it's perfect for me.  I don't have a trigger pull gauge, but I'm guessing 2.5 lbs or so, which is just right for hunting with the heavy calibers I plan to use on this stronger frame.   Thanks again!

This is my first post, so you may have to bear with me until I get it figured out???  Bought a new G2 the other day, I sold my contender years ago.  The first barrel I have is in 7mm TCU, so far, my fire-forming loads, over the hood of my truck have shot 1/2 inch center to center at 50+ yards!!!  I used 25 grns of H322 under a sierra 120 grn. Pro Hunter bullet.  For hunting, I plan on using a 120 grn. Nosler BT.  Any advice would be welcomed.  Thanks.

Kyode, does the reach to the trigger on the G2 seem like it is shorter, longer or about the same as as the old contender. I have small hands and a little shorter reach might feel better to me. I have yet to see a G2 for myself so I have not got to compair.

i just now put one of each in my hand.  the length feels the same to me when comparing the two. the old contenders i have, have herret walnut grips. the G2 has a different FEEL though. it feels great to me. not that the old models feel bad, but it just feels better in my hand. can't explain it, may just be me. i think the forearm is greatly improved over the old models. :D

I believe there is a bit more room between the trigger guard and the grip on the G2, which would lead to a longer reach (and more room for a two-handed hold on the grip if that's your style), but the G2 grip is slimmer.  The combination leads, as KYODE says, to about the same effective reach.  I think they both feel great, too, and my hands aren't that large.

KYODE, glad you like my little trick. I have done close to 50 Encores so far and have not charged a penny. Some people charge $50 or more for the same two minute "trigger job".

yes i like it jeff, thanks very much! i've done one of my encore frames and now my G2 also. the G2 seems to have a weaker spring and may not require more than one light push down on the spring. i pushed mine twice and the trigger was too light at first. it's about right now, for my preference.
i have one encore frame that vvcg worked the trigger to 2lbs. i can hardly tell the difference between the one they did, and the one i did. :D

Encore trigger spring job
« Reply #17 on: January 14, 2004, 05:08:54 AM »
 HELP!!!!Anybody know if weakening the effect of the trigger spring too much will allow the hammer to cock but not fall all the way foreward to depress the firing pin completely . I just  bought a used Encore from someone on this forum--has a light trigger pull, but the hammer does not travel all the way foreward--stops about 2mm short of the frame but easily  pushes foreward all the way with light finger pressure. Any possible solutions?     pg

my G2 trigger is extremely light, but still operates correctly. if it's too light, the hammer will not stay cocked. you may also be able to push the hammer off with forward pressure.
you could try tweaking the spring in the opposite directrion, or replace the spring completely.

Does this work for the classic contender also or just for the G2/encores?

Thanks.

just G2 and encore. the old model contenders are different. i'm not proficient with old model internals. well, as far as that goes, i wouldn't say i was proficient with any of them. :)

At the risk of being called a wisecracker, all you need is to  boost the load to @27 grains of H322, wait till they get in range and sideways, then put that 120g BT thru the lungs. Sounds like a plan.. cbagman

G2 triggers and encore triggers are very similar.

i tested my G2 trigger a couple days ago with a lyman digital trigger gauge. that thing is great! my G2 trigger pull is averaging 15oz's!
