Thankyou for all the "pats on the back", but what I failed to tell you was the guide was right behind me in case I missed. He did say after it was all over and our drawers were clean, "that was the kind of excitement he could do without"

Grizz, that is right where you guide should be when you are shooting close up on dangerous game. As to the excitement, well I am way happy it was you and not me. You are the second person I have read of on line who had a dangerous animal so close. The other was a 500 lb african lion at 10 meters.
I saw a video clip of a charging lion. Although the client hunter was in front, 3 others shot at the lion, 2 hit it. The last shot was by the client hunter; a muzzle contact shot that finished the lion but the lions' momentum carried it into the hunter and knocked him backwards.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a LNIB 45-70 CB with a tang sight..merkel I believe.  While my eyes aren't great, the tang sight seems to be the ticket for everything out to almost 200 yards.
Having said that, I am also going to mount a scope on it and see if it improves my target aquisition speed.  As I said my eyes are not real good but so far the tang is doing ok.

i am with the group not to scope any marlin or wincherster lever with a 20 inch barrel........maybe with one of the new ones with longer barrels but to me and i think most people it ruins the classic feel of the gun.........mine is a 70"s model 94 so i cant scope it anyway except a side mount "uggg" but why.......i have neve missed a deer withe the buckhorn site......i have pondered a peep but the buck horn i can hit coffe canns all day long out to 150 yds offhand..............last buck i shot twith this gun was a 20 in wide 8pter whitetail at 120 measured yds........dead deer.....no scope for me.......my freind had a weatherby 300 mag with a huge scope.......he was hunting a huge whitail in a thick creek bottom.......deer came by twice on 2 doifferent days and he couldnt get the deer in the scope......i told him in that thich stuff take your 30-30 and you will get that deer........he did and now has his biggest deer so far on his wall..........scope a bolt not a lever........mack

added: the only alteration i have made to the sight is the removal of the front hood.......i cant stand them...

A properly zeroed scope allows you to see better---not shoot better.

a low power scope, 1x or 1.5x allows rapid target acquisition, requires no 'alignment' of sights, is clearer in low light and is much easier for older eyes.
