fitting my first barrel....need help...
« on: November 13, 2008, 07:19:55 AM »
i am fitting a ush 20 to my 280 frame, and need a bit of clarification.  i have read the faq's, but need a bit more.  so if my frame locks up tight on a say .004 feeler, does that mean the shim i need to fit into the half circle needs to be .004?  and where do i get the jb epoy?  is it in most hardware stores?  thanks for any help.
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

Is the barrel loose when the action is closed? There could be a gap and it won't need shimming, it may need fitting instead by either flat filing the chamber face depending on how far a round is recessed below the chamber face or by cutting the pivot deeper. If it isn't loose, the gap will be wider at the top which means you don't need a shim.

If it is loose, any shim you use will effectively reduce the pivot from .375" diameter to less so the .004" shim will effectively move the barrel back much further than .004". Try a temp thinner shim to see how it fits then epoxy it in place. JB Weld or SuperMend can be found in a lot of hardware stores and in auto parts supply sources.

Tim, question:  is it suppermend or superweld or the new one you found and I can't remember the name in my CRS head without going back to past posts?

They both look good, have the same compressive, tensile and shear strength, but SuperWeld specifically states it's for steel and is metalized, is heat resistant and can be drilled and tapped, and has a higher bond strength of 1850psi instead of 1750psi. SuperMend looks like it's more of a general purpose epoxy and can be applied underwater.
