Intended purpose of electoral college?

Do you think the original intent was based on distrust of American populace?  Thats what I always thought; Or do you think there are other reasons for not going with popular vote?  I got thinking today perhaps this would give electoral college a chance to verify eligibility of popular candidate.  For example citizenship or age qualifications would be verified prior to final E/C vote.  If candidate could not verify, this would lead to disqualification.

They said on the tube the other night that the general population didn't vote in the first few elections. The pres was selected by the electoral college. Today the electoral college is the only thing that keeps the large states from completely dominating the elections.

  The way it was explained to me, years ago, was it was to keep the military in charge of a civilian to avoid a dictatorship. Say for instance, if General Patton, was very popular to the people due to staggering military victories, but had views as an independant opposing the Congress, then there was a safeguard to keep friction of having a popular president to the voters, who locked up everything in legislation, because he was not part of the two party system. It made sense to me when the professor explained it, but who knows.

I can't decide if it favors any particular party or agenda, but it seems to favor slick campaigning rather than simple national multi-media  coverage.  Perhaps I'm a bit paranoid, but I get the feeling Big Brother doesn't trust the people to make the right decision (Which they didn't).

Too many traditionly conservative states went for Obama this time. I sure hope it wasn't a permanent change.

  I think they'll realize that, as in football, the offensive coordinator may create a good play, but it doesn't make him a good quarterback.....

   All I know is I no longer trust the electorate to make an informed rational choice what with multi-culturalism, feminization, emotionalism,  etc.  Slick marketing by charasmatic politicians who have minimal qualifications but may appeal to emotional non-informed voters will take our country down.  Thanks to television, public school failure, & the liberal media the political climate has radically changed over the past generation.  The informed rational voter is becoming the minority political interest group replaced by slick politicians (On both sides) who know how to stack the deck and there appears to be no way to unfix it.

Rebal   You nailed it and the Dems have figured out that the more of these uninformed voterd they can get out the more times they win. Thus moter voter and early voting and all these schemes so that it takes almost no effort to vote.
