That's a very good size.  Personally I'd use 2F or 3F and about a 1" thick styrofoam wad.

  Looks good. I also looks like it can also be used as a heavy duty beer mug . If you drop it on you foot you don't have to worry about the mug breaking.

I fired it with 1000 grains of FFg and  no wad.  It seems as loud as a larger bore cannon.

 That one would be nice if you just wanted to toss something in the trunk for a day trip with minimal bulk and hassle. Dig a hole to set it at the angle you want and fire away.

 It's a 'suitcase' mortar! Does it come in bowling ball bore?

   Put it at an angle? At 1.7 inches sounds like it would fit a golfball. When I was 16 ,30 years ago. We had the knowlege of gravity (what comes up must come down) Of course we weren't aware that a golfball dropping to terra firma is going at a rather incredible velocity when launched to some serious heights. I think my friends and I would have played "chicken" point the thing straight up stand in a circle and the first to run was the chicken. Of course disaster would have ensued. And our only thought would be "It was good idea at the time" Well I am 30 years older plus just a little wiser now. plus my mommie wouldn't let me have one of those anyway. Go on youtube sometime and it will still show Darwin's law still exists. I have seen some of the antics these teens are doing today there
