We've had cats before and then we have had 4 rat terriers.
We will not have any more cats.

Rat Terriers like to go cannon shooting and cats don't.

The Book came today...thumbing through it, it's my opinion that you should buy it.
Here's the table of contents.

Introduction

Naval Carriage Nomenclature

Section on 1 The Naval Carriage
Getting started
Wooden Carriage Componets
Iron Hardware
Carriage Assembly

Color Plates

Section II- Gun Tool & Swivel Guns
Gun Tools
Sponge/Ram
Worm
Linstock
Slowmatch
Priming wire
Powder Ladle
Hand Spike

Swivel Gun yoke Hardware
Aiming Tiller
Swivel gun Mount
Swivel Gun Tools

Appendix
Cannon Identification tables
Block and tackle Formulas
Manila Rope Working load limits
Instructions for making slow match
Sample Carriage Plans
Glossary

Just thumbing through I picked up this tip.  For structural material use millled "one by" and laminate.  The book shows how to laminate and say that laminate is stronger than solid lumber.  Laminated lumber is less prone to cracking as is solid lumber. Laminated lumber will be cheaper and easier to find. The forth reason he give for laminating is that you can leave spaces in the laminate that does away with need to drill deep straight holes for hardware...a that takes me up page 5

The trail on my Napoleon's field carriage is laminated, as is the bed base for the ¼-scale Coehorn mortar.

In the case of the field carriage, this was done more for convenience than strength. It's a lot easier to find good wood in standard sizes, and I was able to laminate to the width I needed by mixing thicknesses. But it did make a very solid and strong beam. I seriously doubt the trail, laminated from five oak boards (¾"-¼"-¾"-¼"-¾"), will ever warp.

In the case of the mortar bed, laminating allowed me to use oak that I already had on hand.

But since the originals weren't laminated, unless you consider making the trails from two pieces back-to-back laminations, paint will be needed to hide the fact.    ;D

This book is about making a carriage for an 18th Naval gun and in particular a 3 PDR..  But the author tells you how to scale the carriage up or down for bigger or smaller guns.

The book goes over the construction of the hardware from all thread. There is some good info on the making of the cap square keypost, cap square hinge and cap square key.

Capsquares...he says acquire them commercally.

Oh you swivel gun fans fans are going to love this book.  The book shows how to make a yoke and it is not permanent fitted ,  It all slips together and its assembly and gun weight lock it all together.  Tillers and mounts are also covered.  The mount is part of the locking mechanism for the yoke.

DD, you sure that's not my dog? I finally read this thread because I got an e-mail hawking the book (where did they get my address?), and I saw your dog. Huzzah Rat Terriers! Mine is the BEST! What great dogs! I'm sure glad I made the 300mi trek (one way) to pick her up. (MD to CT)

I've found my breed. And, shame on the next Bald Eagle, Horned Owl or Redtail that tries to eat one of my Guineas. She HATES them. Scans the sky diligently for any sign of marauders. Scratching up grass when she spots one at 1000'. She and my donkey get along famously too!. Best dog I have ever seen or had. My compliments on your taste. Enjoy, MIKE

Yep Rat Terriers are awesome...to my dogs a shot means an animal is shot and they should go get it.  No problems with the cannon becauses the shot is down range  before the dogs, but not  by much.  Problem with the Mortar at the shot, the round is still in the air as the dogs launch themselves.

I have been trying to figure out how to break these dogs to harness so the can pull my guns...only problem is that they only have one gear, high!

Right now all three of them are laying beside me here on the couch. Not bad as it is a bit chilly this morning and the dogs are warm.

Dan how you doing on the book?  What do you think?

its an extremely well written book , very easy to follow the step by step instructions

but if I had been the author I would have add an chapter of how to dimension the carriage to your barrel .
and lots more pictures and sketches or drawings on other models of carriages .
the step by step instructions are good , and could easily been adapted for other styles also .

it could also have shown hove to use solid wood and not laminating thin layers of wood only .
but for most people without any knowledge of carriage manufacturing ,
its an very good book to learn the basics , I would recomend it strongly if someone asked me .

Dan actually that section on making a tracing of your barrel and then projecting the carriage onto the tracing on the wall  is scaling the carriage to fit your cannon. You trace the projected drawing to make your scaled plan.

yeah but it would have been good with the real old descriptions on how to choose the dimensions for a specific cannon .
somewhere I have it all , it tell you thickness of cheaks and where to place the trunnion cut in the cheaks ,
diameter of wheels and wheel axles . where to place the axles and lots of more very interesting and important stuff for the construction and building your carriage .
all based on your cannons caliber and length and some other meassurements .

I have Mueller's Treatise. I think most of the dimensions given are in calibers (I'll have to dig it out and have a look). If your tube's caliber were to scale, things would fall right into place. Or, if you applied the scale of your tube's outside dimensions to the original's bore, you could extrapolate the scale dimensions. Now to find the book.....

yeah , most of all old drawings and descriptions are based on the caliber
smaller meassurements are mostly given in 1/16th of an caliber .

Jack Russell's are nuts (eat their young and such). My brother liked my dog. Didn't feel like searching out a RT. Bought a much easier to find JRT (at least around here). Destroyed his house and bit everyone. Had to get rid of it. Then he got a Manchester. He keeps it outside. He said he wishes it had my dog's temperment. There is nothing like a Rat Terrier, even if they look similar. Now, if I could only have gotten her to pose with a powder can.....
