Gods and Generals
« on: December 12, 2008, 04:32:24 PM »
I am at the present time watching AGAIN. Gods and Generals. A fairly accurate in many ways depiction of the Souths' TRUE perspective of the war. Lee and Jackson, I think very accurately portrayed, and Lincoln viewed as quite rash by Lee.
It opens with Lee being offered the job of Major General I believe to lead the assault against the South, and commenting on his opinion of Lincoln.
Has anyone seen this great movie?

Dee, I am sorry to say I have not seen this movie. :-[  I believe this is the sequel (or prequel) to Gettysburg, which was a complete sham. I have a close friend that has it and will let me borrow it. I need to watch it, if for no other reason, to see just How accurate it really Is. I have seen a few clips from it, but I really don't know Why I never watched the whole movie.

SBG, in many ways it is very accurate, even with direct quotes from the real folks like Jackson and Lee. GA. also has the movie. It is a southern view.

Yeah, I heard it was more accurate than Gettysburg, and that it actually used direct quotes. That alone makes it worth watching. Didn't Robert Duvall play General Lee?
I like him. He's one of those actors that everything he touches turns to gold. Like Morgan Freeman, James Earl Jones, and Tommy Lee Jones. You KNOW that if these kinds of people have anything to do with it, it's gonna be good. It says a lot about their skills as actors. They only take quality rolls and give all they have to the part.
Sorry for the OT Dee. Just started rambling. Can't wait to watch the movie. I'll get back to you on it when I'm finished with it.

I've seen both movies and like them both. Gods and Generals is the better of the two in my opinion. I didn't care for the way Martin Sheen portrayed General Lee in the  Gettysburg movie, however Jeff Daniels was very good as Maj. Joshua Chamberlin in both of the movies. Robert Duvall did a waaaay better job of portraying General  Lee in Gods and Generals.

Thanks for the input Elijah. I thought I had seen Duvall in a clip from the movie. I'm usually pretty much up on Civil War movies and the like, but I just never have gotten around to watching Gods and Generals. It's my next pet project for sure.
