45-70 +p ammo
« on: November 11, 2008, 03:08:54 PM »
Has anyone tried the +P ammo available for 45-70?  I have a BC that I have shot primarily Rem. 405 gr. in, but as all who have tried it know, its like aiming a mortar beyond 100 yds.  I'm hunting a power line with some longer shots, and despite the recoil, would like to try some 300 gr. hot loads that make this  distance more reasonable.  I've been using my Handi in 243 with success, but out of curiosity I want to see what the BC will do on white tail.
The trajectory table on the hot stuff looks like it will do what I want, if it doesn't take my box stand down with the recoil.

Eyes are too old.  I've got a vernier sight.  With my glasses on, I can see it and the front sight well.  Can't see the deer.  With my glasses off, I can see the deer, not the sight.  I'm currently using a Simmons shotgun scope in 4 power.  It don't look right on the BC, but sometimes old age defies convention.

take a look at the hornady leverevolution... They are better suited for shots up to 200 yards....

I've been looking at the trajectory on the Garrett ammo.  Mighty hot stuff!  If the tables are correct, I can sight in a little high at 50, and hit zero @ 170 yds.  Thats mighty flat shooting for a 300 plus grain bullet.  The question is, will it be worth the pain?  The buffalo bore and Remmy ammo both group well, but with trapdoor loads and a scope, for me the distance is too much.  Maybe the Marlin ammo is the answer.  I'll giver  a try at the range.  But I still ain't going to rest I guess until I try that high dollar hot stuff at least once.

Someone gave me five reloads a while back, one of which I tried but the primer flattened and the case head ruptured.  My rifle came out ok, but no more of those.

If you want the hottest factory ammo, the Buffalo Bore 300gr at 2350fps would be my first choice, sighted in about 4" high at 100yds, it's dead on at 200yds and 17" low at 300yds with over 1300lbs energy remaining. Their velocities are from 22" barrels, so the calculated trajectory should be fairly close, but you'd want to shoot it at 200yds/300yds to confirm it. ;)

Thanks Quick.  Thats what I'm talking about.  If I can hang onto it, that has enough energy to pass through a couple of deer at 200 yds., and thats about as flat as a big bullet will shoot.

I agree, I shoot them accurately at 300 yards.  There is a considerable drop, but they're right on once you learn it.  It's probably my most accurate Handi at that range.    Pete

If you can find it, PMC had a 45-70 +P with a 350g bullet that shot real good in my lever gun.  Didn't have a Handi then in 45-70.  Can't remember the speed, but think it was listed at 2300 or 2350fps.  I know with the cresent butt plate on that gun, it hurt me as much as anything on the front end would feel. :o :o :o  DP

I just looked at my PMC 350gr+P.
The box says it has a velocity of 2025fps.
Shoots good in my 22" barrel.
Just a tad over 1" for three shots at 100.

Good luck on the PMC Silver ammo, it hasn't been made for a few years, PMC went out of business, some Korean company(IIRC) is making  their ammo now, but none in 45-70.

Update.

Found the Buffalo Bore locally and bought a box.  I fired exactly three shots at the range, offhand off a prop stick.  All were in the center ring at 100 yards, just low of where the Remington green box were sighted.  If I shoot many of these things at targets I will need a lead sled for this B.C., or at least a recoil pad.  My bony shoulder won't take it.  On the other hand, I wouldn't be afraid to take a shot at most anything on legs with this bullet.  Plenty of go.  When it hit the berm behind the target, it sent a big blast of dirt into the air, so much so that everyone else quit shooting to watch me.

Thanks for the heads up Tim.

The trajectory table on the hot stuff looks like it will do what I want, if it doesn't take my box stand down with the recoil.

I tried some of Tim's loads in my 45 70,and they shoot very good (less than 1" at 100). With the 300 gr. Hornady,52 grs.of IMR 4198 it chrone'd 2363 fps.avg.,and thats the starting load according to the IMR loading data page for modern rifles. ( Ruger loads) I don't think I would enjoy shooting it in a Handi though, but it was pure fun with the 24" bull barrel CVA Optima Elite. I'm going to use it on some of these really big hogs down here.  Digger
