Assistance with rust removal
« on: August 13, 2003, 04:28:18 AM »
When removing the grips of my S&W 686 and T/C Encore last night, I noticed the grip / butt stock rod on the Encore and the metal under the rubber grips of the S&W had some surface rust.  I have tried cleaning the rod with a plethora of metal cleaners and alas only a wee bit of the superficial rust has come off. So, what are my options at this point? Can you refinish stainless steel? Is it costly? Does this service exist? I would truly appreciate any professional suggestions because I love keeping my guns in perfect condition both (working and looking).

Thank in advance,

Mark

I've used fine bronze wool (available from Brownells) dipped in solvent or light oil, then gently scrubbing BLUED barrels. The results have been good on the small patches of rust I've dealt with. I don't know if this is a safe procedure for stainless.  Don't try this with steel wool or scouring pads!

I have used Flitz metal and fiberglass cleaner in my Encores.  It doesnt hurt the finish, removes the rust and actually seems to keep the rust from coming back.  I think they are on the web, you can read more there.
