Chopping off .308 Encore Barrel
« on: September 23, 2008, 12:45:09 PM »
I ordered a 26" Heavy TC .308 barrel yesterday for my Encore.  I was thinking that it would be a lot more handy if I had it cut to 18" instead of the 26" that they make it in.  The main reason is most of my hunting is either in treestands or in thick woods where a long barrel can get in the way.  Has anyone done this and how did it affect velocity and accuracy?

If it's done right, accuracy should not be adversely affected.

You can expect a 25 to 50 fps drop in velocity per inch the barrel is shortened.

No idea what it costs.  My best friend has a class II and manufactures silencers, machine gun parts etc.  Didn't cost me anything for my last silencer (except the $200 transfer fee to the BATF) and won't cost anything for the cut and recrown of the barrel.  It's not a difficult process so I wouldn't think it would be that much if you had to pay for it but who knows.

For the rest of us, who have to pay, check out the SSK webpage they list that service there.
I aim to please - but often miss.

I had a Contender 17 HMR cut down to 18.5 inches and it kicks butt. Take it to a good gunsmith. Shouldn't cost over 30.00

I had my 308 medium weight Encore barrel cut to 20 inches from 24. It seems very short at that length. A skilled local gun smith did a quality job for a very good price. The accuracy is very good.

I recommend to shoot the barrel first to see how the accuracy is, because shortening the barrel wont effect the accuracy.  If its not accurate being long it will still be inaccurate when shortened.

I second SSK sskindustries.com they do a perfect job for a great price.

They cut and re-crowned my 15" 454 Casull barrel down to 12".

Can this be done to the fluted barrels?
