Ruger 7x57
« on: January 04, 2009, 05:26:50 PM »
I have just purchased a used Ruger M77 Mk 2 in 7x57.  This one is blued with synthetic stock.  It is one of the older stocks that had the "hollowed out" shoulder stock.

I have read about there being lots of variation in throat lengths for 7x57 firearms.  Some have very long throats designed for the military type 175 grain roundnose bullets, but some newer ones have shorter throats better suited to the spitzer shape of most 7mm bullets.

So my question is, does anyone know what type of throat Ruger used in the Mark 2?  What bullet weights have you 7x57 owners had luck with?

Thank you in advance.

Ruger changed barrel makers twice before making their own (Douglas & Wilson), but simply tossed all barrels into a large parts bin for later assembly, whenever - so there's no way to tell what yours has w/o shooting it.

I had a new one that keyholed the 175gr bullets I wanted to use it  with, and so sold it.

I was already planning on doing some experimenting before spending money on reloading supplies.  I am more interested in the 140 grain range of bullets.  Nonething left to do but go and shoot it.

To bad yours keyholed 175 grain bullets, thats what the cartridge was designed to shoot.

Thanks for the information.

If you want to know what kinda chamber your rifle has just look up the SAAMI specs on it. That's the chamber it has. In today's sue crazy society all American firearms manufacturers build to SAAMI spec it's the ONLY thing they can do if they hope to win a lawsuit if but when it comes.
