Anyone Had A Barrel Cut and Recrowned???

Just wondering if anyone here has ever had a barrel cut and recrowned and if so, was your accuracy affected or enhanced??

I have a 20 year old Mod 700 Rem 243 that has some pitting in the very end of the barrel (from rain water and failure to dry and clean).  The pitting is significant and my long range grouping has suffered greatly.  I was told by the local gunsmith the barrel could be cut 1/2 inch or so, recrowned, and the accuracy would come back as before.

Anyone had any experience with this???  Is this a simple procedure?  Is there anything I should be aware of before proceeding??

I had magnaport do one for me and it came out better than original. Most smiths will do a good job.

I had 2 pistol barrels made for my contender from carbine barrels.

The first one was a 7x30 Waters barrel that I had a smith cut the barrel back to 15 1/2" and then had a benchrest 'step' muzzel crown put on it. The accuracy out of this barrel is out standing. It shoots all bullets very well that I have tried but shoots 100 HP and 140 BTips the best. With the 100 gr bullets this barrel consistantly shoots .375 to .500 inch groups.

That worked so well that I had a 22 Hornet cut back to 12 inches with the same 'step' muzzle crown and then I had the smith add the K-Hornet chamber. Great shooter so far .5 to 1.00 groups but still in work.

I like the carbine barrel conversions because I like the forend stock of the carbine barrels. It is MUCH easier to mount a Bipod on the gun with the better forend. I also think this configuration is the best looking that you can get in the Contender. To me the gun looks as good as it shoots.

If you have the yearning to do it I would say go for it. I certainly haven't been disappointed with my 'conversions' .
