Kathie and I drove down to Bacon County last weekend. My huntin buddy who lives there and I went out to the farm while the wimmins sat around the house drinkin coffe and talking bad about us. So everybody had a good time.

I got all my neighborhood improvement chores done around my stand and made a few observations. First, with all the rain we have had, and are still having up here, it is dry as a bone down there. I'm in a hardwood creek bottom between stands of planted pines, and while the ground is soft, it is far from wet like it usually is. Them farmers sure could have used some of our rain but the cotton, soybeans and peanuts all looked like they did well.
Speaking of peanuts, they've just been harvested. The deer are sure to be feeding heavily in those fields but I don't have any in my area...

But even so there have been so many deer running back and forth around my stand I'll bet they hired a 'coon or 'possum to direct traffic! Darn there's a lot of sign down there! And my longest shot can only be 50 yards! Sure glad I sighted the Ruger SBH, M73 and M94 in to be dead on at 50 yards! I'll save the 45-120 and 38-55 for the long range work!

One thing struck me though. I didn't see the first rub or scrape anywhere we went on the farm. That's a little strange; there's normally a good amount of pre-rut activity by this time. But we still have a few days before the season opens. And it's 'spose to be a lot cooler, and wetter, down there this week.
All in all I'm pretty excited. I may even take a few extra days off. After all I have ... what? 5 rifles and a pistol ready to blood this year?!
