Sub gauge inserts
« on: November 23, 2008, 07:04:58 PM »
I spent considerable time looking at and searching for a 410 insert for my 20 ga. O/U.  While I had no real need for one I did have about 700-800 rounds of 410 laying around. Brielys were more than I wanted to spend and I wasn't all that impressed with the chamber insert type. I then happened upon the four tenner once made by savage. Being a 12" tube I felt it might be a good compromise. What a suprise I got. After experimenting with some extended chokes I settled on an extra full turkey choke that throws great patterns out to about 30 yards. Needless to say this may be my go to gun for ruffed grouse, early season sharptails and doves.  I've thought about getting one for my 12 ga also but I have my doubts I could get it to perform as well as in the 20. The only problem I have at this point is that 1 of the 2 I have is missing the extractor. Something I hpe to solve when I track down a friendly machinest.
Just another worthless opinion!!

The only sub-gague I ever played with were the chamber inserts. I used 28ga and 410bore inserts in a 16ga single shot. The 28 worked suprisingly well but the 410 did not. The longer ones should be better I would think. Byron
