243win to 6mm-06 ?
« on: November 20, 2008, 08:56:42 AM »
I tried searching the site and the web for the answer................ Can  243win be rechambered to 6mm-06? I pulled some dementions and according to my calculations there is a couple thousands too much camber at he neck of the 243 for the body of the 6mm-06. But i've never rechambered a rifle. Thanks

Josh

Josh,

It will not clean up, you will end up with a ring still in the chamber. The one I have thought about in the handy is a 6mm-284, only issue I see with it is the rebated rim, so you would still use the same extractor you have now, but the case is larger in diameter. I have both a 6mm-284 and a 6.5mm-284 on Mauser actions, they are real nice rounds.

I think a 6MM-06 AI will clean it up real nice.

6mm Remington AI will also clean up a .243 chamber, just had two of them done.  ;)

What type of rifle?

I suggest go up to 6mm Remington Ackley Improved or 6mm-06 Ackley Improved, better ignition.

looking in a handi rifle. I take it, it is more than can be done by hand on any of the formentioned rechambers.

Yes, it is too much to do with hand reamig.  The .243 Winchester is based on the .308 Winchester case and the 6mm-06 is based on the .30-06 case.  There is almost 1/2" of difference in case length, and that represents how much steel has to be hogged out to make the longer chamber.

I'm not sure it would really hurt anything if it left a ring in the chamber or not, the brass would just fire form to the chamber and resizing would probably straighten it right out, or you could neck size the brass and just have a funny looking round.  Brass life could be short, but any of the -06 brass can be had for a dime a dozen.  Larry
