I only just saw this post today, but I have to say I have experienced good and bad from both company's rifles. The Rugers I own have been prettty accurate to date. I have a 10/22 and a 77/22 that will both stay under 1.5" at 100 with cheap bulk Federal ammo. I have 2 #1's, a .22 hornet, and a .218 Bee, and they both have been doing very well, still working on load development, but 1.25" at 100 has been easy if I stay away from max loads. I've shot numerous groups under 1", they have been consistent if I keep away from max loads. I hope lil gun will help that. My dad on the other hand has been snake bit by Ruger. 3 guns, none would shoot, a #3 in .22 hornet, an older 77 in 220 Swift, and a 77/22 Hornet stinless model. The last hornet has killed alot of p-dogs, but consistently staying under an inch it cannot do. Throws alot of flyers. The other 2 had no consistency at all, 3-4" groups were very common, and the best load in the 220 swift might make 2" consistently. Between me and my dad we also have numerous handguns. I have a Single six and a mark 2 semi, he has a Bearcat, 357 blackhawk, 45 Blackhawk, and a mark 2 semi, and they have all performed very well.
We also have numerous remingtons from .17 to 300 Win mag. Most but not all have been very good shooters. The 17's have been the worst of the lot, consistent 1" groups are very hard to get, 1.5=2" is more the norm, even on windless days. I have seen several others that were not great shooters as well. One he ordered for a friend the bolt froze on the first shot, and the bolt handle broke off when trying to open it. Had to be sent back for replacement. I think the Remington offers the best factory action for custom work though. My dad has built several silhouette rifles on 700's in 7-08 and 7mm IMSHA( my personal silhouette rifle was a factory varmint 7-08), and those guns would shoot under 4" groups at 500 meters with astounding regularity.
I personally like Rugers, and will continue to buy them, my dad has given up on them. But having seen both sides of the fence, I still believe it is luck of the draw when buying factory rifles. Some are great, some are not, most are useable, some are junk(even some remingtons.). One last comment though, the only guns that I have never personally seen one that is a poor shooter are Savages and Tikkas. Admittedly, I have seen way fewer of these than the others, but I have yet to see one of them that wouldn't shoot under an inch. JMHO, Billy
