Weaver base for a 57
« on: March 03, 2010, 01:17:11 PM »
I am putting a Fastfire 2 on a S&W 57...I am confused as to the weaver base needed. model 401 black or 48109 # is what Weaver told me for an N frame size, but I see on other web sites, they come in either 1 piece or 2 pieces. Am I correct? For a small sight like the FF2, would the small base work? My gun  is already drilled and tapped. Do I place it above the centered above the  cylinder to help keep gases off lenses? Or what is proper placement, just common sense? Thanks, Tony!

I did not know Weaver made a base for that gun, but I looked at their website and they do.  Their chart shows a 1 pc with the number you have.  I cannot see how or why a 2 piece would be used.

Just a thought, but I have always used the Leupold Dual Dovetail base on my S&W's.  They are a very solid mount.

I've never seen a two piece Weaver for any of the S&W guns. Might exist but I can't imagine how it would work. There are two bases tho one that must be Drilled and Tapped and one for guns that are D&T from factory.

I have the latter and have used it on a few different revolvers in the past. At one time I had the other that was for guns not D&T from factory and might still have it in a box somewhere. I bought it by accident before getting the right one. I just didn't pay close enough attention to which I needed to buy. Be careful or like me you'll be buying a second cuz the first wasn't the one you really needed.

Al Georg in his book Pioneering Handgun Hunting shows pics of using Weaver two piece scope mounts on a N framed S&W?
