Opening Day Deer
« on: November 23, 2008, 02:55:04 AM »
I passed up 2 does. My buddy shot at 3 bucks he said ( I didn't see them). At 4:05 I got a six point  that dressed out at 135. One shot .243 75yards? bang flop, neck shot. I didn't want to trail it in the dark. Sorry  no photos of the deer, forgot camera. This is the first deer for me in 25 years. I just got back into hunting as I am retired now. I will go back in a few days and try the Handi .357 on a doe or two.

How has every one else done?

Congrats Oldyardog. I just got home this morning so I haven't gone yet. Tomorrow is supposed to be my first day, but they are calling for 10-20 mph winds and a 90% chance of rain. I can't kill them at home on the couch, but that don't even sound good.

I have to wonder how many of those three your buddy shot at were hit but only wounded perhaps to die a lingering death later.  ::)

Bill that is a good question. I was concerned about that myself until to day. He called to say that he re-sighted it in (offhand this time) today and found it shooting 9 inches low and 6 inches left at 100 yards. Seems his front scope mount was not tight. as he was shooting at deer 100 to 200 yards away I feel a lot better.I am not sure how good a shot he is offhand. I have only shot from the bench with him before. I always sight in off hand before hunting and know my limits.

Oldyardog, you better tell your friend that he is only allowed 1 buck per day in TN, max of 3 per season.
I didn't see a single live deer this weekend. My wife is into her 3rd deer season and finally got blooded on Saturday morning. Needless to say she is delighted. She has a rifle, ML, crossbow and shotgun and off the top of my head she has probably been deer hunting at least 40 times. This fine ole' doe went down to a single shot from her 243.

Old English your wife did well. I am beginning to think my friend gets buck fever really bad or he is seeing deer that are not there.  Good luck to you two on your trip. I am going to try to take my 14 yr old granddaughter out the week end after Turkey day. This will be her first season. She can shoot the Handi .357 very well and will let her carry that. I think I will use my Blackhawk. We will hunt on the ground and only shoot under 100 yards. I want her to learn not to take iffy shots.
