Hi power season

   Oh boy it is just around the bend.  I have the old 30-06 checked and also the 6.5x55 mouse gun.
I may drag out my 94 Win classic this year , haven't used it in a lot of years.
Then there sits 3 54 r's, my no 4 brit , the super 16 30-30 and 14 inch 45-70,25-06, 30-06 Savage ,actually have 4 usable barrels for the Sav . just need to swap em out. Krud now I just remembered the Handi 2 barrels for that . I know I have missed a few . I am in the same mess , so little time and to many usable deer slayers to use.
    Help how about a vote (( what should I use this year ??))

Why the term "high power" as opposed to centerfire or just firearms season?

Most use those terms. Not a put down just interested in why the use of that term.

Didn't really consider it as odd. Lots of folks around here have always called it hi power . Guess it comes from a generation of being taught by old farmers and WW 2,  WW1 veterans. I remember the first 06 I hunted with , a nice surplus 03 that was not cherry but a good shooter.
   First time I took it out my uncle a WW 2 vetran that went through the bulge and other campaigns always called it hi power and I just guess I never change. I had great respect for both him and the WW1 vet that I knew who also called most centerfire a hi power.

That is the only explanation I have at the moment.  By the way you got a vote on what I should hunt with. Am loading 140 gn in the 6.5 -sweedish mouser right now. Just jumped on to look up a powder charge I haven't used it it is possible.

Yeah I know 140 is heavy , but Killed 2 with 120 soft point and 120 balistic tip last year. If I don't use a different rifle / cartridge I will use a different bullet for each year.

Maybe just an area thing. Different areas of the country call things by different names. Being from Bama it just struck me as odd. Here we just say firearms season.

For a 6.5 my preference is for one of two bullets the Nosler 125 PT or Hornady 129 BTSP. Really the Nolser 120 BT and 100 PT are fine as well and for sure any 140 will work. I just prefer the first two mentioned. The Nosler 130 AB is another great bullet and I think Hornady has recently come out with a IB in around the same weight also.

I am going to try the 140 weight for this year, Last year I used 120 bal tip with great sucess, and a first time hunter used some 120 soft points . Both were 1 shot kills.
  I may use the super 16 tc a few days also.

  May load a few of the ones you mentioned I think I have the 129's laying around here somewhere. I have a thing about always using something different every year to hunt with.
  If it is not a different rifle / pistol it will be a different weight / type bullet.

Whether you call it rifle or high power season, it's the best time of the year and it arrives Saturday. I just got an old camper at a great price and that will just add to my pleasure this year. A tent is Ok but...... My wife and I are doing our annual 3 day hunting trip to Cheatham WMA over thanksgiving.

Neat term... what part of TN do you hale from? Im in east TN & have never heard that term. Gun season is all Ive ever heard. Been seeing bucks chase does all week & will be in Columbia TN come tomorrow night for our 5th annual "meat" hunt. The worst harvest the three of us have had so far was year before last & we took 13 in 2 days. Then come home & clean & cut-up deer for 2 days before Thanksgiving. Good Luck Everyone!!!

I was raised in Columbia, graduated from Central High......now I'm near Chattanooga.  What part of Maury county are you hunting?

That kind of terminology can be regional or just passed from family member to family member. I always call muzzleloading season black powder season even though I haven't used black posder since Pyrodex came out. I got the term from an uncle and it stuck with me.
